The yank's only public ownership outside of the Military/government departments is their postal system. I think they know want they are doing. Anyone agree?

yes.
the post office is pivotal to business. When Rowland Hill started the post office, Britain was an European backwater. Once he got going, so did the country.
Anyway, why are all you Yanks jumping on a british question? Got no work to go to?

The post office, royal mail and parcel force should be kept public. Remember the governments sold everything like the gas electric and water and trains. Nothing is owned by us the taxpayer any more and do we benefit ? No just the foriegners who now own all our once great companies and see how the prices have risen and the service has gone down. All of these now put profit for shareholders before customers requirements. When these once great british companies used to belong to us we got what was needed now all of the companies are owned by big global company. Prices and services will fall and private companies can't make money from a standard letter being posted from lands end to john o'groats for 34pence!!! So services like that would soon disappear. Also every one moans when a post office in their town village or street closes well that is because the governments have chipped away and let your local convenience store take over the sale of tv licences etc and bill paying from your post office making them take less money so that they can then be the next one to close!!

Yes, the post office is a public service and should not be operated purely on the basis of profitability.

Private competition will do nothing for the everyday person in the street, it is only of benefit to other businesses sending large volumes of letters etc who don't use post offices anyway.

We at least got that one right when we split from the Empire didn't we!
If it is privatized wait and see how fast the smaller villages and communities are without mail service! You can bet as soon as they can the private companies will discontinue mail service to the smaller towns, villages, and communities. That means even if you do not believe in gambling because the will not be gambling.

Yes. In private ownership it would be decimated. Only the busiest profitable bits would be retained. This could mean no post offices or mail deliveries or collections to outlying or remote rural communities. It would all be down to profit, not social needs or service. Private business is not a charity.

Absolutely. It's about time we realised that not every single thing needs to be run for profit. Some things (Police, Armed Services, Prisons, Health for a start) need to be publicly funded to underpin the rest of the - privatised - economy, and keep it going. Otherwise we abandon everything to the cowboys and we'll get the Wild West and everything falls apart.

I'm American. I love the postal service in the US... what isn't broken does not need to be fixed.

Its cheap and efficient to use USPS... the people who work there are always helpful... my tax money is worth it for that service.

No. The Postal Service in the United States should be privatized and forced to compete in the free market. The quality of service continues to fall while prices skyrocket.
