The name is cicada. They live in other places besides just South Carolina and some southern folks call them jar fly.

That would be the cicada.

It doesn't really look like a giant horse fly, though. To me it looks more like a cicada.

Cicada. "Locust" is a colloquial term for the same insect, although locusts are technically a type of grasshopper that migrate in hordes, i.e. plague of locusts.
