What are the Legalities of his contract? Can he just walk out and join another team or do the Lakers need to agree on a trade?

He can opt to not play and he won't get paid.

The problem with your theory is that Kobe is a competitor and has one good brain cell and he will not sit and lose all of that money. His pride in statistics will take over. This guy wants to be in the HOF. He is in his prime.

He can't just walk out tomorrow. He is under contract. Even if he retired the Lakers still own him. He would also owe the Lakers money. You know that big signing bonus he got? Yeah he would owe a lot of that back to the Lakers. He isn't going to sit just for that fact. A lot of athletes have tried that but it doesn't work.

If the Lakers don't agree on a trade Kobe only option would be to sit out two years, he can't even play overseas because the NBA has an agrrement with FIFA that if a player is under contract with an NBA team, they may not play over there until the contract is up.

he is under contract... he HAS to play for them if they don't trade him. in two years, he can opt out of his contract and enter the free agency market. until then, if they don't trade him, he is contractually obligated to suit up.

if he doesn't suit up, the team can bench him without pay

I'm not sure where exactly he is in his contract, but since there's no talk of him being a free agent, I doubt that he can just opt out.

No he could sit out. He wouldn't earn money but he has enough. So they would have to trade him. All he has to do is say i wont play until you trade me. and he'll do exactly that
