Likely you just have a driver issue with your sound card (or integrated sound if part of the motherboard). This is an easy enough thing to solve though.

Open the Computer Management console (Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management).

Select the Device Manager and look for any entries with a yellow question mark.

Likely your sound hardware is lacking a driver. You can try right clicking on the entry and letting the OS automatically go to the Microsoft site to find an appropriate download or you can go to the Compaq website and locate the driver download from there.

If you've checked that speakers are turned on & plugged into the correct socket at the back, it is most likely an issue with the sound card.

Right click 'My Computer' & select manage

select device manager & have a look if any devices have a yellow exclamation on them.

If they do, this means that no drivers have been found for these devices.

You can click them & select update driver. It will find it off your driver disk & start working.

If you don't have a driver disk, visit the compaq support website, or www.driverguide.com

Maybe so.

Reinstall the sound drivers. Click START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL, then ADD NEW HARDWARE.

Select from the list. Choose a generic Creative Labs sound controller.

Should be good to go.
