Element 101 is called Mendelivium, created and discovered by Greg Choppin and Glenn Seaborg. They named it after Mendeleev, the creator of the periodic table.

By the time all the spectacular chemistry/physics conventions in the early 20th century, Mendeleev was the old man that was generally incoherent but so paramount to their progress that he had to be respected.
