In fact the reason is for increasing the chances of his genes surviving into the next generation. Having fertilised the female's eggs, he then provides her with a good meal to enable her to develop them and thus maximise the chances of producing a healthy brood of offspring.

This is actually quite common in the animal kingdom - it's seen in spiders, and praying mantis, for example.

It's actually rare among octopus. Octopus are shy and usually unaggressive......This may be more likely in captivity, since the male has nowhere to run.

Since the female produces thousands of eggs, the male need only mate once in his lifetime. Staying alive afterwards is not necessarily important, as long as he gets the job done.....

This kind of behavior is more common in arthropods: (spiders, scorpions, crickets, praying mantids,etc...)All of these creatures produce a large number of eggs, so from an evolutionary point of view, ending up as a midnight snack isn't as bad as it sounds. By eating the male after mating, the female gets some much needed protein to nourish her eggs....

the aim of male and female octopuses is to have as many kids survive as possible.
the sacrifice of the father helps the mother and the kids to survive.
in this way, although the father dies, his genes survive as the next generation.
