I just read a post in which someone said that Paris Hilton is admired for being rich and sexy. I also once read the response of a Bush defender who mentioned the fact that Bush belongs to a prominent family, as if that were a virtue in itself. The only reason why Paris Hilton and George W. Bush are rich is because they were born to wealthy parents. I'm not saying that being rich is a bad thing, but I also don't think it's something to be admired if the person in question didn't actually WORK for the money. Paris Hilton and George W. Bush are merely enjoying the fruits of their ancestors' labor. Since when did being born rich become a virtue?

I think Molly Ivans said it best when she said GWB was "born on third base thinking he hit a triple." This applies equally to many "elite" people - the Bushes, Hiltons, Kennedys, Rockefellers, etc. I have much more respect for people born into poverty or who have a humble upbringing who work hard to achieve greatness. They know the value of hard work and of a dollar, unlike those born with a "silver spoon".

I have more respect for a poor single mother working two jobs to keep her kids fed and clothed than I do for any of the lot of them.

Being born rich is NOT a virtue, nor is it a vice. What matters is what one does with the privilege. Many "new rich" understand the meaning of charity, like Bill Gates, George Soros, and Warren Buffett. Most born to wealthy families tend to have a feeling of entitlement, not compassion.

Paris Hilton, GWB, Patrick J. Kennedy, etc, are only behaving like most spoiled rich kids behave. Doesn't make it right, though...

Well said. My mother always uses the phrase "accident of birth." Paris isn't even sexy enough to get attention for just that, like if she were just a regular chick in the burbs, she wouldn't get as much attention (this is if we are just being superficial here). GW would probably live a middle class existance working in a factory somewhere.. accident of birth. Being from a wealthy background is mostly beneficial, like a mediocre student from a pretigious prep/private high school can gain admission over a better student from an innercity neighborhood. So i think these people should remember that.

It's what you do with the MONEY ... I think it is RUDE that people CRITISIZE "george" or "paris" for the reasons you are suggesting, you know they do numerous charitable things...

It sounds like some people are JEALOUS, I think some people need to take a look in the mirror...and ask themselves WHO TH$EY really are...
Are some people like CINDERELLA's "stepsisters" and "stepmother"?

Isn't it admireable to TAKE money and TURN IT INTO SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL?
I mean nobody has to go out and BUILD companies and create jobs that are going to last into the days ahead but they do... nobody has to go out and use their money to fund certain charities but they do....

At the end of the day if someone wants to buy sports cars and other consumer goods to fill their life with, well that ios that, just remember it is the PRODUCTS that PEOPLE make and have jobs as a result of... people who have a little extra money laying around often help FUND the economy in ways that you would not believe unless you took a moment to stop and think about it...

Again think there are some people who really need to stop being so childishly JEALOUS... it's really only holding them back in reality...

Sometimes it's wiser to WORRY about your own bank account, and not get hung up on thinking of other people's business...

Absolutely nothing is admiable about being born rich. If you havent worked for anything you have, you don't deserve my respect as a person.

i think being rich is only admirable if you actually worked for the money you have. :) your wealth is the fruit of your labor....i admire you. but if you're just born rich..i just think you're very lucky.
