Well you need to make some sort of revolutionary discovery or invention that no one else has and it needs to change human life for the better (in most cases).
Just be a quiet hard working scientist that really gets all the work done. Deep down nobody likes "superstar" scientists. They isolate the common man and their own colleagues.

First, determine the field in which you are most interested. Then within that field find the problems which are being debated. After that, take those problems and attempt to solve them.
Its quite a bad guide, but there isnt much to say on how to become a famous scientist.

Some ideas:
- Develop a Grand Unified Theory of Everything. (Physics)
- Solve the energy crisis (Chemistry)
- Find an effective cure for cancer/HIV (Biology)
- Develop a theory which is deemed better and more accurate than is previous (General)
- Derive a simple, yet world changing equation (E.g. E=mc^2)
- Develop a vaccine which will eradicate all diseases (Biology)
However remember, the most famous of scientists remain out of the spotlight.

Change your motivation! If you seek fame and fortune, you'll never discover anything that brings fame and fortune.
The scientists who became rich and famous are the ones who were motivated by the thrill of the discovery.
