1. Uninstall any software you've recently installed. Especially any authoring software that you may have **recently** installed or made a significant upgrade to.

2. Disable "autorun" and see if it still happens.

3. Try it with any anti-virus software turned off - some versions of Norton floating around out there (especially older versions for XP) can cause this as they try to check the Disc when inserted/read. If you think it is a virus, etc., try using a tool like Trend Micro's Housecall - it'll let you check your box online. Just turn off your existing anti-virus before attempting.

4. Replace the drive and cable - this can happen if either go bad. This is my bet since it seems to be happening any time the drive is read accessed. Newer drives are really el-cheapo and notoriously el-cheapo in OEM versions.

5. If all else fails, take it to the corner computer store. They shouldn't charge more than $35.00 to tell you what is wrong. It may be a better use of your time............

Hope this helps......

Have you try to use good AV and good Spyware Detection to scan your system? Try it first! You may try AVG Anti Virus and Spyboot Search & Destroy for that purpose It's freeware.

You can also opening Task Manager. If you are using Windows-XP just press Ctrl+Alt+Del and go to PROCESS Tab. Try to see is there any un-usual or strange process already running on your PC. If you are unsure or not having enough experience on deciding which one is normal and whicsh one is not normal, you can use search engine and put the process name one-by-one to see what is it actually. Try to [END PROCESS] each process running on your PC which is seems unusual according to the Search engine result.

Good luck.

get a portable hard drive(perhaps burrow from a friend) and save your data to that(note that the virus can easily get on the harddrive)

format your computer, reinstall and update your AV

plug in your portable hard drive to get back your data but first scan
BUT BEFORE ALL THAT TRY THIS
you can also try an online scan go to these try them all they can catch what the others have missed

NOTE if you do what stuart said and change the boot order than you will have to change it back to use a recovery CD

The term you need to learn today is 'boot sequence'.

What's happened is that, through screwing with the buttons and knobs, you've changed the boot sequence to read from the CD first. Not good.

Start the computer. When the memory check screen comes up (the early black screen before Windows loads) press the F2 key on your keyboard. That will take you to SETUP.

Change the boot sequence to read the floppy drive first, then the hard drive, then the CD. (The sequence will be A: then C: then D:)

Save the changes.

That's a new one. I'd uninstall the DVD ROM drivers and reboot. Reinstall from windows update or CD.

If that doesn't help come back...
