Here are some recommendations for someone who lives in north coastal san diego county

Restaurants: By the beach, nothing beats the Beach House in Cardiff; must eat on the outdoor patio right next to the beach, plus they also have discounted meals if you get there early for dinner http://www.thebeachhouse.com/Cardiff%20by%20the%20Sea/CARDIFF.HTM

Best margaritas at El Callejon in Encinitas. For the rest of your life you will compare all margaritas to theirs.

For a fun, 1950s era feeling try Corvette Diner in Hillcrest, which is across the street from a nice art house cinema (if you like that kind of thing) Hillcrest Cinemas.

For the most amazing desserts, especially good for the most expensive/outrageous cakes ever, try Extraordinary Desserts in Hillcrest.

For upper end gormet dining, Mille Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe.

For fish tacos, I'm a fan of any one of Rubio's take out chain; their first shop was in Mission Bay.

Shopping: several good high-quality discount outlet malls in San Ysidro (right next to the border), Viejas (next to the east county gaming casino) and Carlsbad Company Stores in the north coastal area.

Best malls are probably Fashion Valley and Horton Plaza.

Beaches: Don't tell anyone I told you about Moonlight Beach in Encinitas...it's a nice little family beach. Silver Strand in Coronado is absolutely beautiful. Torrey Pines in Del Mar is beautiful and also close to hiking in Torrey Pines State Park if you like to do that. Pacific Beach and Mission Beach are "lots of people" types of beaches, with both the good and bad parts attending. Mission Beach also has the Coaster, a old restored wooden rollercoaster, as well as the Plunge pool. Mission Bay also offers rental sailing/jet ski options. Ocean Beach is not especially attractive but the laid back hippie atmosphere and related community are fun. I'd stay away from any south county beaches (Imperial Beach) because of ongoing sewage problems from Tijuana.
