Okay, I admit I need some help with my asparagus, I planted several last year and I have heard that you can begin to harvest at the end of the second year, right? I'm not sure how I'm supposed to be maintaining the plants because they are tall, thin and feathery. They don't look like anything I would want to eat. Do they really need sand in the soil, I have a little but not much? Should I be trimming them? Fertilizing them or doing something special, this is my first attempt at this plant.

If they are tall and fethery, they are well past the edible stage. You harvest them just as they come up from the ground in late winter and early spring.

No, don't trim them. Yes, you can throw manure on them, but not too much at one time.

OK. 5 years ago I planted 1 year roots. The 1st year I cut 1/3 of the shoots (6-8" tall), and left the rest. The 2nd year I cut 1/2 the shoots, (6-8" tall) and left the rest. The 3rd year I cut until I was sick of it and left the rest, and the same the 4th. Next year I will cut them all, but leave one or two per root, for next years energy. The bed will go 20 years with no fertilization, etc.

I don't think you should need fertilizer if you planted them properly. My dad used to grow asparagus and he'd dig a VERY deep hole (about 5 fee) and then mound manure into it about 4 feet. He'd then add a manure soil mix for about 1/2 foot and then fill the rest with regular soil. He'd plant his asparagus in that hole. He said it would take 2 years to start getting really good asparagus and then he had it for many years.

Everyone has a how to do it.! I myself prefer yo see what the pros do.
See link below.
It requires lot of work and patients but if you love asparagus it's worth it.
You definately need manure to fertilize and you needed a deep hole to prepare for compost, manure and leaves .

If you leave them alone and continue to water your garden as usual. they will continue to grow randomly in separate stalks just coming up from the ground. Pick them when their are enough to eat. Bend them til they snap and through the bottom away. The smell doesn't make you smell bad only in your urine.
