Tell them to sit tight - outside - while I went in and called the cops to come help them. Of course I'd grab the biggest knife in the kitchen while calling the cops and check to make sure that all the doors and windows are locked.
That way if the stranger at my door had bad intentions, the cops would be on their way and I'd be armed with my big knife.
If the person was just innocently lost, then they'd be helped shortly by the cops.
In this day and age, you can never be too careful.

Absolutely nothing. I live alone and Nobody, but nobody comes to my door after dark and gains entry or even a conversation through the door. The can just find their way back down the driveway, head to a pay phone since they're obviously clueless and don't have a cell phone.

I'd answer the door with my dog. He's an 80lb Akita and people are always intimidated by him (although he's a big baby).
I'd try to give them directions, but they would never be allowed in my house.

Point my high powered rifle at him and tell him to get the hell off my property. In the age of cell phones, there is no excuse for knocking on someone's door.
