we want to install sky for our rented home. the agent said that we have to ask for permission of the owner before installing it due to wall drilling . the stupid owner does not live here, he lives in italy. his son lives here, we tried to contact him but he is rarely available. what to do? shall we simply phone sky and let them fix it and face the consequance? or keep waiting like this?? we are seriously impatient now, it is holiday time and no entertainment.....please advise

your best bet would be to try and contact the owners because if the are funny buggers they may charge you to have any holes made etc to be repaired, but if u aint that bothered just get it done and dont say anything they probably wont even notice or get NTL (even though the customer service is poo) so u dont have a dish, but i dont know if u have a dish now with sky cos i think its digital but i am a woman and what do i know!!!!!!!!

To be honest, if you go ahead and install the dish/cables, etc and the owner kicks off then I think the worse they can do is force you to "make good" when you leave the property. This is standard in most tenancy agreements and basically means that if you add a fixture or fitting that causes permanent markings to the property then the tennent is responsible for the cost of repair.

It will be worth checking your agreement to be sure that there are no special dispensations.

Hope this helps.

I rent out a house and i woudln't mind if the job was good and you had made reasonable attempts to contact me - a letter to the agent would proove that.

However be aware that the dish becomes part of the chattles once bolted down so you can only take the receiver if you move - standard practice in the UK.

I own and rent several properties and this is a common request. Write a letter to the owner but send it to the agent to be passed on. (Make them work for their money) Say that you are having the Sky system fitter on such and such a date (Say about 4 weeks notice) and if the owner objects could he please get in touch with you before that date. Should be no problem but make sure the fitter does a neat job! Some are a bit too quick with the cable fixing.

Don't do it.

You'll at least lose your deposit, and drilling into a wall is creating irrepairable damage (as you can't properly fill the holes without it being obvious), so you could be done for criminal damage.

Wait until the guy returns your call, or best still, get the agent to contact him.

Rather than have "Sky" choose the "BT HomeHub" which gives you wireless internet access, telephone and "BT Vision" that includes all the Freeview Channels & Premium Channels as well as on demand and films (movies). It's just as good and best of all no Dish to upset your landlord, as it all comes down the telephone line.....I love it, it is also just one bill. At the moment they have some great deals as well, all far better than Sky and it's not owned by that pariah Rupert Murdoch.

I'd tread carefully if I were you. The owner may appear one day and charge you for damages to his property. I would keep trying to contact him and try and do it in writing so you have some proof that they gave you permission.

Hold off on the installation. Your agent has your best interests in mind here.

Now, if you seriously want skylights (I assume that's what you mean), you can put that on your wish list for when you obtain your own home instead of rent.

Did the agent try to contact the landlord for you? if they didn't, they should.

My suggestion is, be patient. remember: the landlord still holds your deposit! right?

Good luck
James
