fuel is injected into a cylinder. When it ignites, it pushes the piston down and in turn the piston rod turns a shaft called a crank shaft. The crank shaft turns a gear in the transmission which turns the wheels of the car. The piston's up and down movement are called RPM's, revolutions per minute.

The petrol is drawn out of a tube from the petrol tank into a fast moving jet of air in a thing called a carburretor, or injected into the air.
This air is forced into the combustion chamber of the engine where it is compressed to high pressure. Then a spark plug produces a spark to ignite it. It burns and goes to an even higher pressure, and pushes down a cylinder that turns the engine. The engine is attached to the wheels via the clutch, and the car goes forwards (or reverse).

Intake, compression, power and exhaust are the strokes of a 4 stroke gasoline engine, the energy created by that force is transmitted through various components, far too numerous to mention, which power the front or the rear wheels or all of them at once. Gears and such handle the load, the transmission turns the drive shaft which, in turn, turns the gears in the rear end and transferring that force to the axles in a rear wheel drive car. Not a simple matter but if you look at a go-cart, you will see a different form of the same logic, only using a drive belt or chain, motorcycles are similar.
Hope that gives you an indication of the complexity that's involved.

Petrol and air is injected into the combustion chamber. Piston rises and compresses the mixture. Spark plugs ignite the mixture and explosion pushes piston down. Exhaust valve opens and releases byproducts. Piston rises. Repeat procedure.
