I have to say the Depp version. I personally thought that at the end of the original Wonka was really mean at first. Depps character didn't seem to dislike kids as much. I mean the humor was definately different in both. I dont think the Depp character hated kids, he disliked naughty kids!

Besides the underlying storyline, the two are completely different. Tim Burton's version is, of course, darker and portrays Wonka as more of an guy with evil tendecies. I personally loved the way Johnny Depp portrayed Wonka. Quite a change from Gene Wilder. I think, as a child, I would have liked Wilder better. As an adult, I prefer Johnny Depp's acting skills. (Not to mention, he looks much better doing so.)

I like them both. The 70s version is a classic, and despite going from being very intrigued about hearing that Johnny Depp and Tim Burton were going to do it, to very depressed after I saw the trailers I ended up thinking it was pretty good. I was definately pleasantly suprised. I think Johnny Depp did a good job.

I prefer the original version. I think Wilder was darker versus Depp being stranger. I love the boat ride monologue. I also can't stand the new ending and the added-on back story about why Willy was the way he was.
As to liking or hating kids, I think Willy likes good people, and believes that only kids have the capacity to be truly good. So he hates kids who have adult traits.

I much prefer the Gene Wilder version. And I think he really loves kids! He just acted like he didn't to weed out the bad seeds! I thought the Depp version was just too weird. I enjoyed it okay, but I thought his interpretation was kind of creepy. Wilder had a glint in his eye that sort of told us he was up to something. Something good.

the original is so much better! the characters in the first one are so much funnier, especially the tv kid, and i like the music better too. the new one was so annoying, esp. the Charlie actor, and it was stupid to have the back story with Wonka's dad the dentist- he's better as a mystery character. the new one tried to be creepy like the first one (tunnel scene in chocolate river) but it was just weird. i think the gene wilder wonka likes kids but depp seemed to hate them. i have strong feelings about this haha the original is one of my favorite movies

It's waaay tough for me. Originals are always better, but I love Depp and Tim Burton is just a genius, so I think I'd have to go with the newer one. It's a very, very close call.
I think he just hasn't been around kids so much that he's forgotten what they're like, and a lot of the movie (both, pretty much) he is getting used to them and I think only warms up to Charlie.

I much preferred the original movie. And you're right, age doesn't matter, as my 10-year-old, 8-year-old, and 5-year-old all prefer the original as well.
I think Willy Wonka liked kids, but was very jaded by his experiences, and therefor wasn't exactly the kindest, most gentle person when it came to dealing with them. In the end of both movies, when his issues have been resolved to a point, you see that his demeanor changes a bit and he softens. He shares the joy and excitement that Charlie is feeling.

I prefer the Wilder one.......its a classic that I grew up on (and hey......the intro just makes you want to go to the store and get LOTS of candy)
Johnny Depp's performance was amazing.........a little creepy, but he brought a new interpretation to the character. With Johnny as lead and Burton behind the camera........weird and unusual shouldn't be a surprise, its a given
