Hello. I am going into my sophomore year of high school, and am 5'11" and 235, but am in the process of becoming 190 lbs. I want to play on the basketball team, but am only used to playing in the post (because growing up, I was a lot taller than most my age) but now, I am questioning whether or not I'll be able to play F or C due to my height. While, I am expected to grow taller, I still have doubts. You think that at my height I could still play F or C in high school? Thanks in advance.

Okay Josh, here's my opinion and thoughts of what I think may help you discover exactly what you want to do as far as playing basketball. First things first, never limit your potential at what you want to accomplish. I imagine your top goal is to simply play on the basketball team at what ever position and be one of the best players on the team. You understand you have the ability to play in the post from prior competition and where your coaches may have placed you. I think it would be better to work on your funddamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting, footwork, position (defensive positions such as boxing out, offensive postion such setting screens) things that make you an invaluable player so there is always a spot on the team for you, instead one position to limit yourself to. Then after that expand your game. What I mean by this is work on your shooting range, dribble through traffic with both hands, squaring up on shooting jump shots (follow through, release, and rotation), endurance, and most important, your knowledge of the game and what to do in game situations. Some of the games greatest players are not as gifted and talented as every guy on the floor, but they know what to do in game time situations and they continue to add to their game to be a complete basketball player. how tall you are and how big you are never has determine what kind of player you will be, hardwork, dedication, and heart will and always has. I think Charles Barkley is one of the greatest low post players to ever make it in the NBA and be successful and he only stood about 6'4" and weighed about 285 lbs (I'm guessing on the weight but he was a big guy), but he was great.

I think you can be and play whatever position you want, just put in the time and dedication and you'll be good.

One Love, KJ

It depends, if your the biggest or just the best center on the team then you should play that, but if there are other guys you should work to get better at forward. It is a lot better to be able to play to positions though because you can become more versitle so in the drills sometimes be the Center and somtimes be the forward and see which one works out best.

You will probably not be a center, unless your team does not have much height, you probably could play forward, and if you worked on agility and skills more, you could probably be competitive with the bigger slower forwards, but it would never hurt to go to a speed camp and work on your speed and ball handling.
The fact of the matter is: if you're not tall and you wanna play basketball, you gotta be really good at defense and ball handling

First lose the weight since you are on a the hefty side. Seriously !! Dont worry about playing center just worry about making the team and being healthy for the team !!

a coach once told me "Today's fowards are tomorrow's guards." anyone should be able to play any position, no matter what, so work on your post moves for underneath, but also your dribbling and outside shooting for the guard and small forward positions. one of the best players on my hs varsity team was almost 6 feet tall, and could play underneath. she played all 5 positions, including the point and was amazing at all of them, despite her height. she also got a scholarship to a div. 1 school...
therefore, no matter what, work on all positions and the coach will put you where he feels best.
hope it helped!

Work on your all around game, so that you don't have many weaknesses, your height will determin what position you play, your skills will determine if you get any playing time or not.

Definitely not Center.. maybe F. Better start practicing those 3-pointers though, bet you'll end up behind the arc.

run and run. and keep practicing the basics.. from there you can evolve to an all-around type of player.
