When you want to have a garage sale, do you just have one? Do you have to get a special permit from the city or anything?

You should be able to just have one. Now mind you if you live in an area with a strict HOA rules you may need to ask.
Also check your local papers for "Area Flea Markets" where a local parking garage is "rented" to people to bring all their stuff to sell. This way you don't have to ask anyone to have one.

Some areas require a permit, some don't. Better to call and ask. Normally, law enforcement will not even mess with one but if you have a jealous or hateful neighbor, a complaint would have to be answered.

It would be best to ask your local government. Here in Illinois you need to have a permit. I don't think it costs much, if anything at all. You really should check though, it would avoid any possible citations.

you have to have a permit for it. if you dont the state can fine you. i knwo thats how alabama is. every state has its own laws so i would find out.
