A server is the machine that stores information that people can access. The client is the person getting the information(you).

The client sends data to the server. For instance when you click a link it sends that information to the server and then the server sends its information to you the client.

You could almost think of it like a restaurant. The host is the kitchen and chefs who hold supplies of food (files). The server is the waiter who knows how to fetch the food (can walk the walk and talk the talk and take orders from you). The client is the customer who gets the web page (a plate of food returned in response to a request from you)...fortunately, in the computer world, we don't have to give the server a tip.
