My car has recently started to make a squealing noise when I am driving. It also makes a sound when I am in reverse. When I step on the brake it stops. I looked at other answers and some people said belts and others said brakes. I need a straight answer so that I dont break the bank trying to figure out what it is. I know that the brakes usually make that sound when the brake pads need to be replaced and it is 'metal on metal', but like I said, it only makes the sound if I am stepping on the gas. I really need to figure it out, its loud and very annoying! I want people to look at my car because of the bass coming from it, not the squealing!!

My car is a 2003 Hyuandi Accent GL. The sound is coming from the (if Im sitting in the car) left front tire. Its pretty high pitched. It happens when the car is moving. It happens on the freeway (70-75 mph) and on the city roads (20-45 mph), but never when its just sitting still. When Im in reverse, I step on the brake and release a little bit and when I release it almost sound like a bed squeak, dont laugh {Eee-Eee}. I got the car used in Feb. I dont know what other details to add. I dont think its a belt or it would squeal when I start my car...I would think.

the noise you describe sounds like a brake sensor as you have the sound basically all the time unless sitting still and when you hit the brake the noise goes away, thats how the sensor is supposed to work to tell you that you need new brake pads.

There's no way to get a "straight" answer on here. We don't know where the noise is coming from. You didn't give enough info about the occurance. You said it squeals when you step on the gas. Is it moving or sitting still? Is it a high pitched squeak or a lower pitched squeal? Or is it a whistle?
Brakes squeak only when you are rolling. And they have a piece of metal that rubs on the rotor before they wear out that squeaks to warn you that a brake job is needed before it does damage like metal to metal. It will be a high pitched squeak sometimes like a bird chirping when it first starts then become a steady squeal as the pads wear more. If it squeals while sitting still, it's for sure not the brakes. If it squeals all the time with the engine running and only changes pitch slightly as the engine revs, it's probably a belt. If it squeals forward and reverse only while rolling but not a high pitched squeak, there could be something like a rock or other foreign object stuck and rubbing on the rotor or brake drum.
That's about all I can think of right now without some more info.

If the squeak is when you step on the gas, then it sounds like it is a belt squealing. The belt may be glazed and is slipping. Open the hood and have some one step on the gas and see if you can spot which belt is making the noise. good luck.

If it is a belt it will make the same noise if you wind up the engine when parked. If you have a front wheel drive car it may be a CV joint. This usually sounds worse when turning. If that is it you better get it fixed before you have it come apart and cause a wreck.

Put toothpaste on any belt and if the squealing stops "yeah", if not it could be an alternator bearing going out, they make horrendous noise, as do water pumps. If you run your car with no coolant in it your water pump will fail. If you unplug the alternator and the squealing stops there is a short in the wiring somewhere.

What year make and model is your vehicle, I have a loud squeal noise, that mine makes, and its not belts or brakes, but trust me you don't want the same problem I have.

if the noise changes when you brake im betting its your brakes they have a metal tab to make noise to warn you its time for brakes before you do major damage
