It sounds like there is probably a clog past where the toilet and shower meet, causing the toilet water to flow into the shower. Try some drain opener or muriatic acid.

It is normal for them to be plumbed into the same soil stack. If there is a clog in the drainline it will back up.
Since you posted in the DIY section, I will assume you want to try this yourself. You will need to clean the waste pipe out either mechanically or chemically.
I have had success when I was in a sewer equipped house by opening the cleanout access and using a ram to break free the obstruction. If you don't want to do this (it is messy), you should call a plummer or sewer cleaner.
It is worth noting that if you have a septic tank that is plugged or full it will do the same thing and back up into the house or percolate onto the lawn above the tank. Unfortunately if you have filled your tanks to the point of a backup, it is likely that you will have to dig up the tanks and replace them. It is much preferred to empty them before they backup....and cost about 5% of the cost of replacing the tanks ($250 instead of several thousand).

it is because the shower tray is at a lower level that the toilet and the waste pipe for the shower must be going directly into the soil pipe close to the toilet outlet. The shower waste must be taken down lower to correct this mistake.

You don't say if this is a new installation or a problem with an existing set up. If existing then you have some answeres but if new then the problem is in the shower waste pipe lay out. It should enter the soil pipe at least 300mm below the toilet joint.

You have a clog. Normally, the toilet drain is part of the main drainage system (3 or 4" line) You can either try renting a sewer rooter or hire someone to do the work. Since this is backing up into the shower, I would not advise using a caustic drain cleaner.

Most likely you have a hair or tree root clog in your sewer line past the shower. You can rent a snake and try to remove the clog youself but my advice is to call a roto-rooter type company and save yourself a lot of work and mess.
Why not make the service company responsible?

It sounds like you toilet and shower aren't properly vented. There should be a "stink pipe" to let the gasses escape and help suck waste down. I would call a plumber for this one, installing or fixing something like that can get nasty.

Sounds like the air vent for this drain my be plugged, Check on you roof to see. To unplug. put a water hose in the top and feed it as far down as it will go and run the water. My friend is a plumber and I had to do the same thing to my house and it worked like a charm

It could be that you have an air admittance valve fitted (durgo) somewhere on the soil pipe which is stuck, or you have a blockage, check the manhole outside for backup. Be prepaired to get your hands dirty :) :) :).

You need to call the water company if you have sewer because it could be backed up. If you have a septic tank, it could be stopped up. You need to call a person who specializes in this. Look in yellow pages
