Either it's not necessary to be Prefect in order to be Head Boy, or JK Rowling made continuity mistake. She's made a few mistakes before, that have been corrected in later editions, but this doesn't seem to be central to the plot, so it hasn't been changed.

Lupin did say that James had calmed down and became more responsible after 5th year, and James could have tried very hard to become a prefect or Head Boy, especially if he thought that he could get closer to Lily that way (who was a prefect and became Head Girl)

Hope that helped!

James wasn't a prefect, True, But you can be Head Boy/Girl and never been a prefect. I do believe that James straightned up to become Head Boy because he knew Lily would get it. He loved her. And also he was Quidditch Captain, He was level with the prefects. Harry might not have been a prefect, but if he would have attended Hogwarts his 7th and last year, I think he would have gotten Head Boy. There was no one else better for the job!!

Well it doesnt say that you have to be a prefect first does it? I've read the books so many times and i have never thought of this. Lily (harry's mom) was a prefect right and then she became head girl and maybe James shaped up so he could be head boy cuz he loveeeeed her =]
sorry im not much help

Didn't it also say James was quidditch captain, and Hermione told Harry that he was on equal standing with the Prefects when he became quidditch captain. So perhaps James was in the running for head boy after all?

That's my theory.

To become headboy or girl, they wouldn't have to be a prefect first, but they were probably generally chosen from the prefects. I don't remember reading that, I'll have to rer read some of the books again still.

I just have to say to the person that said they arent into Harry Potter Nerdy crap...then why are you looking at and answering Harry Potter questions. If this forum is supposed to be about gaining knowlege in different areas of interest shouldnt you be looking at and contributing to something that is on your agenda? It really irks me that people post negative unhelpful responces like that just so they can elevate thier status on yahoo answers by getting points and make themselves feel better by putting others down. Get a life.

Violinagin hit it right on the head, I think. Hermione does, in fact, state that Quidditch captains are equal to prefects in HBP. Makes you wonder if Harry will become head boy (if he returns to Hogwarts, that is).

Is it July 21 yet?

I don't think you're missing something, maybe one of them lied. I'd have to read the exact pages over and the Order of the Phoenix again.
