Yes think of the environment and get a job closer or move closer to your job... Typical Americans, drive large cars with big engines and then complain about the price of gas / petrol.
How much do you guys pay now? $ 2 a gallon? Try $ 8 then you will have room to complain.
Don't worry you have your gas reserves in the middle east to rely on when yours runs out in 20 years.
Sorry if you think I'm being nasty but come on, the American government don't make the decision in America its the big businessman, isn't that why Kennedy got assassinated? Because he didn't follow the normal path & was against Vietnam war, where allot of the business men made there money.
Best president ever, along with Abraham Lincoln who demolished slavery. And was murdered either by Johnson the vice president or bankers!! thats the thery...

If you spend 8 hours of your day asleep and another 8 at work, you spend 5 of the remaining 8 driving a car. No it's not a good idea especially with gas costing more than $3 a gallon.

Working 8 hours, with an hour lunch, takes 9 hours. Add 5 hours more, and it's a 14 hour day.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Not to mention that the 5 hour commute is going to really be expensive. Added to the cost of a divorce lawyer, you'd surely be better off flipping burgers at McDonalds, locally.

This is not the Careers section. This is Astronomy & Space.

Putting a lot of wear and tear on your own car sounds like a pretty goofy idea to me. Your insurance premiums will also reflect higher rates for higher risk due to higher miles driven. And then there's the high cost of gasoline. Sucks to me.

The job had better pay well PLUS provide the extra TAKE-HOME PAY for the extra annual costs AND another new car every couple of years.

Well i guess that depends on how much exhaust your car puts out. Regular gasoline puts out a sufficient amount of pollution. Diesel puts out more because of higher octane and sometimes sulfur. Propane vehicles only put out water vapor and carbon dioxide. To make it short if your car has good gas milage say in the 30s that would be okay, anything less may not be so good. It's your call in the end though.

2.5 hour commute per day? Is that each way?

In either case, that is a really long commute, and it will wear you out eventually. Not to mention gas and wear and tear on your car will add up. If it is a really great job, I would look for a closer place to live.

with gas prices the way they are< I don't think it's a good idea, but if you are going to be making great money to pay for the gas and still come out on top, then it's your disision, but still driving 2 1/2 hours your going to be tired before you even get to work, and then driving home, to much for me to do every day.
