The other night my computer forze up so I did a manual shut down. when I turned it back on the Windows Selection Screen comes up I have tried all of the start up options with the same results I hit enter and the computer shuts down again. I figured it was a problem with Windows so I tried to boot the Windows CD it starts checking the system configurations and shuts down again. the CPU is running at 79 degrees C I took off the fan and heatsink cleaned them off dust I did notice that the stuff that goes between the heatsink and Processor is dry . . . could that be a problem? and if so what is that stuff called?

It sounds like your CPU is bad. The boot process is very easy on a CPU, but when Windows loads it goes into a different mode which is where the problem is in the CPU. If it were a software problem, it most likely would not shut down when you use the CD to boot.
Also, since you removed the heat sink, you will need to completely remove the old "heatsink compound" and re-apply some new in order to get a proper thermal transfer when you get a replacement CPU.

That's VERY hot for a processor. Make sure that your CPU fan is working correctly. That stuff is called Thermal Grease...you might want to get some.

had the same problem. Reinstalled windows, changed power supplies, replaced heat sinks, and it wound up being a dying motherboard!
