i think you've misunderstood. the tank is constantly full and it isn't using the salt.normally it doesn't have water in it unless it is recycling.

The purpose salt tank is to brine the resin bed of your water softener. This brine of salt solution cleans the minerals out of the resin bed. What will happen occasionally is the salt will become bridged (a solid chunk) of salt. To cure this try using about three gallons of hot tap water. Pour it into the salt tank. This will help dissolve the bridged salt.

I have a white tube inside the salt tank which has a tube coming to it from the water softener. This tube has a big crack in it. I am seeing a brown substance mixing with the salt. Do I need to replace the white tube?? This white tube is about 4 inches in diameter and about 3 feet long.

Water IS supposed to get into the salt tank. It takes salt water to recharge the resin. It's supposed to drain afterwards, though.

It could be the controls. You're going to have to call a repairman.

The tank needs the water to dissolve the salt. It is normal.

It is normal to have some water but it should not get above half to 3/4 full.
