If your cruise departs and returns to a US port then as of this year you can go on a cruise without a passport. Starting Jan 1st 2007 (who knows may eventually get bumped out) you will need a valid passport with even cruises.

Keep this in mind though. When say taking a 7 night Caribbean cruise if there is an emergency that requires you to fly home early without a passport you will be unable to fly from say Jamaica, Cayman, Mexico, etc. There will be no exceptions on this.

Odds are this wouldn't happen, but trust me in 8 years I have had some very unfortunate things happen over the years to my clients where my hands are tied. That is another reason where travel insurance is so very important especially when traveling international.

If you are able to prior to cruising I would definitely apply and try and get your passport. It just will be in your best interest.

If the cruise is to the Caribbean region and/or Mexico, passports are no longer mandatory . Passports for land and sea commute is rather no longer mandatory until June 2009. Even then, cruises that initiate and end interior an analogous port interior the U.S. would be exempted from the desire for passports. See web pages under. Now, some cruise lines like passengers to have passports, so which you will call and ask their coverage.

WASHINGTON -- A new rule starting in January will require U.S. citizens to show two documents -- a government-issued ID and proof of citizenship -- to re-enter the country by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean.

But residents will not have to show passports until next summer. That's because the Homeland Security Department on Wednesday delayed by roughly six months a new border-security requirement that citizens traveling by car, boat or cruise ship present a passport. The move follows a three-month reprieve for new rules requiring passports for Caribbean travel.

You don't need a passport to leave, but you need one to come home. The cruise line will probably insist that you have one. Ask your travel agent.
