My daughter just turned 1 and on Mon at the Pedi office, she weighed 14 lbs. She is a breast fed baby and during the day she is fed formula and baby food. The Pedi right away, said she had lost a few ounces since her last visit and is concerned; so right away he said she needed to be tested for cystic fibrosiss. So, we took her to the lab where we sat there agonizing over her and watching her cry when the lab tech tried 3 times to draw her blood. Well, according to the Dr, all came out fine that there were some abnormalities in her blood, but nothing that would really stand out. He did say that she had a high level of acid in her system and is now testing her for that to find out why. Then he tells us, he did not have her tested yet for cystic fibrosis. So here we are again, upset & agonizing over our baby girl. I can't sleep at night & can't concentrate during the day. The disease does not run on my side of the family and neither does it run on my husbands.Has anyone gone thru this?

It does not mean anything serious. First of all it was totally wrong that Pedi office spells out any name of a disease where they have no idea actually. Disease names can be put after all investigations concluded. The correct way was Pedi office sends you to higher investigations just because your baby girl is underweight. Once they spell out any disease name without any support, there a family with sleepless nights, simply victimized...

Yes, they have to find out the reason of having a high level acid in her blood. I see lack of explanation and care for parents on the doctor side. Is it Ph of the blood or Uric-acid or any other type of acid? If there is a malnutrition, baby starts eating her body fats, which explains the loss of few ounces, and acid levels increase. This is not too bad if it does not prolong.

You can change your doctor if he does not explain everything including possibilities to you in plain English.

The right weight of an infant shld always be based on the birth weight. There is no specific assigned weight at a certain age. Weight gain is similar to running a business. In order for U to know how much gain is made, U shld first determine the capital invested. So if the baby was born small, he shld not be expected to reach the weight of a larger baby at 1 year of age.

Weight loss of few ounces is not so alarming. At one year, the infant is more active, more mobile and so tends to burn more calories. He also will tend to lose more water because of his activity and if the weather is warmer then he will sweat more. One ml of water is equivalent to 1 gram in weight. So if a child sweats around 100 ml, that wld be 100 mg loss of weight. Hydrating the baby will bring back the lost weight.

Try this before thinking of any dreaded disease that may cause U depression.

If U cld see that ur baby is active, feeding well, he is doing fine and don't ever think that he is sick. Illnesses always have manifestations and weight loss is NOT the only parameter.

Dear Worried Mom,

May God Bless your daughter and ease your worries! My suggestion to you is this.."GET ANOTHER DR. WITH A QUICKNESS!!!!" Your daughters Dr. stated that she needed the test for "Cystic Fibrosis" Simply based on the fact that she lost a couple OUNCE'S? Adding insult to injury..Why in the heck did it take this "Lab Tech" 3 tries to draw blood from your daughter? ...
I hope that you requested a copy of the blood tests that were run ! What were the high levels of acid "Uric Acid"? I also highly advise you and your husband to do some research of your own. Trust me on this one...no matter what, get a .SECOND,AND THIRD OPINION ..also it would be a good idea to make an appt. with a Hematologist!
Stay positive your daughter needs to feel good vibes from you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All the Best,
Pea

she is pretty small but their are children in my sons daycare that are one years old and wearing a size two or three diaper. a little girl that was born on the same day as my son is small too. Don't stress over it. As long as she is eating her meals and bottles/ breastfed correctly you are doing everything right. All you can do is keep in contact with the doctor and make them do the tests for Cystic Fibrosis and do some research on the side in your free time. sometimes if you bring up ideas that you think might be the problem it could help finding out the problem faster with her doc. I really hope that there is nothing wrong with her. let us know a update, please.

No, I have never been in your shoes, but I have been in situations of similar instances. My son had cancer at 2. We were crazy awaiting this test and that test. Don't allow yourself to be distraught. I know that it is hard, but you have to be strong. Push for tests as well as results, as she should actually weigh more. It may not even be cystic. It may not be any thing real drastic at all. It may be something samll and minor. I would say i the doctor is slow and taking his time maybe he is being thorough. I would however call daily for results, and push for the other tests. Good Luck Grl.... My prayers are with you....MB

At one years old your baby should be walking or at least crawling fast... She should be eating solid foods like rice and baby granola,, this will make her heavier and in turn more healthy.. babies at times don't like to eat much, so you have to have alot of patience....keep at it...

Don't treat your baby like she has a desease, treat your baby like it is healty.. also, the most important thing, is if your baby is happy and energetic, that is a good sign... If your baby is lathargec.... get second opinions..

my 5 yr old and 1 yr old haven't had anything yet, I wish you well. PS. you have to worry, but you also have to get your rest... you hae to sleep and focus on other things while you wait for test results, etc. That is the only way you can help your baby.. a healthy mother is just as important....

I would tell you not to worry, but as a mother it is almost impossible not. So with that said, keep in mind that your baby is growing. This doesn't necessarily mean in weight. She is much more active now, walking or crawling, and her length I am sure has increased. Babies go through many ups and downs with height and weight. I am sure that your baby girl is fine. She is adjusting to new foods and may or may not be eating as much as required. Try not to stress yourself out and wait and see what the Dr. says. :)

your going through a very stressful time, im sure everything will settle soon
im sure cf wouldv been picked up by now, in australia our newborns get genetic testing for cf at 2 days old while still in hospital, my sons freind has cf and is very healthy, as long as its treated correctly, but its probably not cf anyway, the doctors will work this out, try to relax about it, stay positive and strong,
very hard to not think about it too much, just enjoy your baby and being a good mum, everything will fall into place, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Don't stress too much. My friends babies were tested for downsyndrome when she was pregnant and it came back positive, later they said they made a oops they tested on 1 baby and not 2. They also make mistakes.Did she start walking? If so they also loose weight that way. Dont worry too much. And GOOD LUCK.
