Do we get the same respect as white people or less?

Filipinos are not racists. We like tourists to come and see our country. There are many things you will like in our culture. We respect everybody regardless of race, color etc. as long as the person respects us too. There may be some exceptional people who are afraid to speak English to you but do not feel intimidated. Some are just not used to seeing black person but that doesnt mean they look down upon blacks. Filipinos believe in equality. We know how it feels to be discriminated...that's why we do not tolerate bad treatment.

My husband and I ran into a black man from Los Angeles here in Tacloban. He seemed to be getting along just fine.

This isn't the US where over half the people are white. A black man here is just as much of an oddity as a white man. :)

And, I agree with all the other posters ... you'll find that if you show respect, it will be returned in kind.

I've known several African's who have lived in the Philippines. In general being a foreigner (of any color) means that there is an initial reaction of both curiosity and shyness. If you are polite, and do your best to fit in with the culture you will not have any problems with respect. The biggest problem that some of my African friends have had is that their cultures tend to be louder and more aggressive, whereas Filipino culture is quieter and more reserved. There will always be people who treat you differently because you're a foreigner, but as long as you're trying to fit in you won't be treated any better, or any worse than any other foreigner (of any color).

Hope that helps.

Respected? no problem as for black skin I would have to agree with Harry as I have a sister in law that is darker then the rest of the family and wants to be lighter BUT don't let that stop you as I have seen many black men here with their GF/Wife and they look happy to me. As far as my opinion on your question on how I would see you if you where here is that your blood is the same color as mine and the skin color means nothing, OK yes the skin does I get sun burned faster LOL. Put your worries behind and come, just be your self and you'll be fine

Here is the truth. Filipinos all want to be as white as possible. They love white skin. They will be nice to you but the society as a whole seems to revere the lighter skin Filipinos. Many will say I am lying, but just watch how many TV commercials sell skin whitening products, (must be a reason.) Also, look at the most loved actors, actresses and singers, all light skin. My wife is Filipino and she says it is true. She asked me how I know this, I learned it from watching TV while I was there. Not hard to figure out.

It always depends on the individual, but on the whole Filipinos respect anyone as long as they are respected in return.
