Did anyone else notice how big of a popularity contest the votnig is? The Tigers, Red Sox, and Yankees all have at least 1 player in the top 5 in the AL. In the NL the Dodgers have a player in every position except one and he Mets have one at every position. I'm not saying that any of those players don't deserve to be there but something really should be done. What do you think?

To the Yankee fan who says the Tribe sucks, this has nothing to do with them. You must not have a life if going around insulting other teams is what you enjoy doing. And if you don't mind me asking who has a better record?Indians or Yanks?

it figures the Yankee fan would be on here and say something stupid, but that's what they do.

It has been like that for awhile, I though the Tigers got screwed last year and I'm not a Tigers fan, hell they had over .600 for a while and they only had like 1 or 2 players, I think they should have another factor along with the fan votes, so at least some good players make it in.

VOTE ALL YOU CAN FOR THE INDIANS PLAYERS IF YOU'RE AN INDIANS FAN!!

GO TRIBE!!

I noticed a long time ago, but it also seems unfair in a way that every team has to have at least 1 player. I hate to see deserving players left out because you have to have 1 from K.C., or Tampa. There are a lot of problems with the game, such as tying in home field for the World Series. Team with the better record should get home field. There should be more than just homerun derby, they should see who can throw a ball the farthest, or fastest.

I asked a similar question the other day. There are a lot of deserving players that should be starting. Holliday and Maggs should be starting in the OF for each team, as well as Justin Morneau at 1st base in the AL. The fact that Lo Duca is nipping at Martin's heels in the NL is a joke...but this is how it's always worked. As much as I don't like it, it is for the fans. The fans get what they want by voting in the players, and people like you and I get to see the deserving players get chosen by the managers as reserves. I don't like how people say the All-Star game is meaningless...home field advantage is a pretty big deal.

The All-star game has the starters selected by voting because it is supposed to be who the fans want to see. It has been a popularity contest for years, and it will be one for years to come. MLB will never change it because the voting and the controversy brings publicity. Besides, they know that if you took the time to vote for a guy, you will take the time to watch that guy play in the game. Managers pick the replacements when someone pulls out of the game to make up for the voting. It is the managers job to pick the most deserving player that did not get voted in.

re/ ropar's concept of other skills competitions besides the HR Derby:

There used to be such things -- throwing, baserunning (timed runs from first to second), maybe a few others.

Then, in 1989, Barry Larkin hurt himself in the running contest and was out until September.

And that was the end of the other competitions. No way was it worth losing a star player (remember, All-Star participants, who tend to be among the best in the leagues) because of an exhibition. The Derby survived -- chicks dig the long ball, after all -- but the others are no more, and not likely to come back.

Of course you know you are right. I have never been in favor of the fans selecting the starters in the all-star game. It is even more of an issue now since the winning league in the all-star game also wins home field advantage for the winning team in their league for the world series. The only way to even the playing field is to get the fans out of the mix and put the responsibility of selection back in the hands of the players and managers.

What should be done? Who do you think does not belong out of the Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers, Mets that you are referring to?

The voting has been like this for a long time friend. The fans pay the bill, that's just a matter of acceptance and believe me, if baseball felt it would make the overall fan base more happier, they would change it.

Polanco, Pudge, Maggs, Inge, Guillen, Casey, Sheff, Verlander, and Bonderman are all having great seasons so far, most are at top of some sort of stat, and all of the field players have great gloves and bats, they all deserve, but not all of them are, to go to the all-star game.
