A lady acquaintance of mine has recently returned from Iraq where she was working as a freelance photographer. We are friends but not that close (e.g., we have friends who are friends) and we have gone out a couple of times before, but don't visit one another or anything like that.
I asked her how her trip was and, when she had finished, I complimented her on her integrity (what with going to such a dangerous place alone), 'You've certainly got balls,'.
Now for me, this just means the same as 'You've got guts,' or 'You're brave,'. albeit in perhaps a rougher way. But she took offense, being an ardent feminist, as if I was equating her actions to manliness. Of course I apologised, but I wondering if any other girls would take offence at being told this? Thanks

In this day and age of feminism and equality, I think she should have been flattered. Funny how it works, some want equality and when they finally get it, they don't like it.
You can't have your cake and eat it too!
Enjoy your day dear, and your "friend" should lighten up and take a compliment for exactly what it is, a compliment.
Oh, and her going to Iraq, I would say she had balls as well.
It takes courage to do something like that.

NO. I have much more experience of people and I don't take them literally. If a new acquaintance uses an improper word I may wonder a little but an old acquaintance using certain terms is okay for I can relate it to their habits......Moreover, I go for the meaning not actual words used. Even if the words are sugar-laced if their meaning is offensive I do take offence.

hiya, I purely discovered this be conscious some days in the past in my Arabic classification reviewing salat. the basis be responsive to qawwamun (plural of qawwam) is qama intending to stand. In prayer the status place is qa'im. Qawwam is a robust style of qa'im and shows continual action mutually with a shelter or caretaker. So the impressive interpretation i think of could be that adult males are caretakers of the girls and likewise their guardians. i do no longer think of it has something to do with intelligence over women folk. You being smarter than your brother could o.k. be genuine yet no longer supported via the Quran in any trend so a methods as i understand. I even have considered an incredible sort of misinterpretations in translations of the Quran according to semantics and that i'm ever surprised. My suggestion to all you females, is to earnings to parent. learn Arabic and that's what i'm doing.

I wouldn't. To me sometimes those are the right words to express the view point your after. Sometimes saying you was brave don't get it.Having balls means so much more then bravery or got guts. I think this feminist needed more time to unwind.

I would not be upset over hearing it, but the phrase is meant for men not a woman. You could've chosen your words a little more nicely KNOWING she was a feminist. A nicer compliment might have been to say what you meant: I really admire your bravery and appreciate your service! Something like that would've won you points!

Sorry, but she needs to grow a set, if she gets offended so easily. In today's day and age, worse things have been said to people and no offence taken, so What the?....
I'd have taken it as a compliment, not offended or treated as derogatory comment....

Balls and guts are synonymous. I don't see what the problem is. She's seems to be overly sensitive. But now it seems like people are always looking for things to find fault with.

I wouldn't take offense to that and I am a feminist. Next time say 'it takes a uterus.....'
For some reason I would be more offended by a uterus comment.

I don't think too many women would take offense to that...I don't see why she would.Being in the military alone puts her up a couple of notches on the manly scale any damn way.

My fiancee tells me all the time that I have bigger balls than he does. I take it as a compliment. In my opinions, all of these "isms" make people a tad too touchy.
