This dodge will crank and run for 5sec. then die. lose's it's fire to the plugs. sometimes it will crank and run find, but most of the time it won't.

Sounds like a bad crank shaft position sensor.
It needs to be diagnosed by an ASE certified technician though.

1989 "there's your sign" Dodge cars in there late teenage years rebel and get cranky. It is hard to get any teenager to act right. The lean burn ECM located on the airfilter is vunerable to heat and vibration really bad for electronics. Your going to have to find a 50 year old dodge mechanic with experence with Dodge smogged up 318 V-8 engines. I used to work on the dynasty cop cars they had a 4 bbl Rodchester electronic carburator...Not at all like the civilian 2bbl Carter Carb.

Don't quote me, but that sounds like you've got a bad coil pack in a distributorless ignition system. That or maybe the contacts are especially nasty between them and the plate.

I worked on a couple similar cars with a similar problem.
