(x - 1)/(x - 3) + 1 = (x - 1)/(x - 3)

This equation has no solution!

Here's why:
(x - 1)/(x - 3) + 1 = (x - 1)/(x - 3)
Subtract (x - 1)/(x - 3) from both sides:

(x - 1)/(x - 3) - (x - 1)/(x - 3) + 1 = (x - 1)/(x - 3) - (x - 1)/(x - 3)
1 = 0?

(x-1 / x-3 )+1 = x-1 / x-3 .. is this what you mean?

(x-1/x-3)+1=x-1/x-3
=> (2x-4/x-3)=(x-1/x-3)

here you shouldn't cancel the (x-3) which is in denominator on both sides, because they didn't mention that x != 3.

on cross multiplying, we get

(2x-4)(x-3)=(x-1)(x-3)

2x^2-10x+12=x^2-4x+3

=>x^2-6x+9=0

(x-3)^2=0

therefore the answer is x=3,3.
