Ingnore the prior Answerers because even though there is indeed some color then especially in the mountains in fact the 3rd week of September is still early for northern New England as well.

If you want to see spectacular colors then, (3rd week of September) from about 23, September, to 30, September you need to go to the forests of the Laurentian Plateau in Québec north of Montréal and Ottawa, in Canada.

Or delay your trip for 2 or 3 weeks. The most spectacular colors in central and northern Vermont and New Hampshire - considered the lovliest area of all - is roughly between 9, October and 18, October; for central and western Massachusetts and Conecticut, also very beautiful, from about 15, October to 25, October.

Although there are some trees within the city of Boston that get gorgeous, many of the trees planted in the city are not so because the city plants trees that are resistant to the effects of winter road salt and most of those varieties' leaves just turn brown before dropping.

Be advised that people come to Boston from all over the world to see the New England autumnal leaves and so hotel and motel and inn and B&B rooms can be hard to find. Fortunately, for some strange reason the Québec foliage is not as world famous so getting rooms there is easier (and they are usually cheaper), and of course you can easily drive from Montréal into northern Vermont to view the foliage there as well.

Foliage usually starts further north and works its way south. Really nice colors don't start in the Boston area until October. So, if your looking for fall colors I suggest New Hampshire, Maine, or rescheduling your trip.

The third week in September is way too early for Boston area. You would have to go to the Northernmost areas of Maine, NH, or Vermont for foliage that time of year. Columbus weekend (2nd week of Oct) is usually peak time for Boston area.

It may not be the best time then. All depends on the weather. There is no way to predict. Go to New Hampshire's White Mountains or the Green Mountains in Vermont.
