1 year = 365.242199 days (approx 365.25 days)
The earth should ideally take 365 days to complete one revolution around the sun. But since it also rotares around its own axis all the while during this time, it takes 365.242199 days to complete the revolution.
Since it will be difficult to have a new year to start on 0.25th of a day, the year is counted as 365 days. The extra 0.25 days of consecutive 3 years are added with the forth year to make it 366 days. This is the leap year.
As for the seconds, now you do the math.

Google tells me:
1 year = 31 556 926 seconds
Should we believe it?
In fact, the Earth is slowing down due to something called 'tidal braking' (a result of all the fluids - water and air - sloshing around with the pull of the sun and the moon) and will continue to do so, so 'leap seconds' are added at various times to keep UTC (measured by very accurate atomic clocks) in step with the length of the year (measured by the exact time of one rotation of the Earth about the Sun).
If you want to understand more about leap seconds, this article in Wikipedia is good: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_second
Google is CURRENTLY correct but the number increases by a very small amount each year, so an EXACT number of seconds depends on the year in question!
An approximation to the nearest 6 hours would be 365.25 * 24 * 60 * 60 = 31 557 600 (a little too many), because there are approximately 365.25 days in a year. It's a little less than that, actually, which is why in years that are divisible by 100 but not by 400, there is no extra day.

average year has 365 + 97/400 =. 365.2425 days. EXPLANATION :-
The vernal equinox is time when the sun is directly above the Earth's equator, appearantly moving from the southern to the northern hemisphere.
The mean time between two successive vernal equinoxes is called a tropical year, and it is about 365.2422 days long.
Using a calendar with 365 days would result in an error of 0.2422 days or almost 6 hours per year. After 100 years, this calendar would be more than 24 days ahead of the seasons (tropical year), which is not a desirable situation. It is desirable to align the calendar with the seasons, and make the difference as small as possible.

okay, actually, there is 365 and a quarter days every year, and the term leap year comes with an extra day because we ignore that one quarter and slot four of the quarters into every fourth year to make one day extra in February.
but anyway, there are:
365 1/4 days in a year
365 1/4 days = 8 765.81277 hours
8 765.81277 hours = 525 948.766 minutes
525 948.766 minutes = 31 556 926 seconds
i guess that's all you wanted to know, bud. have fun with the info!! hope i have helped your cause in some meagre way...
