My brothers and sisters in Islam, they keep telling us we are being silent (heh, yeah, me, silent, big laugh!). They say not a single muslim speaks out. Even though we do on a daily basis.

What do you think of this?

""Mainstream theologians have come out unanimously against the terrorists. What we must now ask them is to campaign more strongly against the aberrant doctrines that underpin them", writes British Muslim convert scholar, Abdal-Hakim Murad."

Actually, no, I didn't dance. I watched in horror as it happened, and worried about one of my uncle's living there. Oh, yeah, btw, I'm an American Citizen, born and raised. Does using my freedom of religion and not harming anyone make me less of an American?

lol I think they are confused. When a Muslim speaks out against something they believe in, they start saying that we are over reacting, that we are extremists.. Then they say we don't respond to them even though more then half of the people that respond are either Muslims, or feel no hatred against us. So you don't have to worry about those people that say these things sister. Their philosophy on life is apparently... " I'm proud to be Ignorant ".. wonder if they can start their own religion... CONFUSionism... or have a ignorant pride parade. Anythings possible in the land of the "free".

I'll tell you what. There has been some brainwashing done on both sides. The Muslim, and the non-Muslim sides.

U try to explain people that suicide bombing is haraam and they will tell u "but they killed our brothers. We are doing Jihad". U try to tell them, "maybe u should first explain them our religion. That's what Prophet and the Rightly Guided Caliphs did. They explained the basic principles of Islam before atttacking" so they tell you, "time of explanation is gone!" (I don't think time of explanation is gone bbut we are not taalking here aboout me).

N this is just not it. Other practices such as Vanee (ask ur husband to explain u or e-mail me), honor killing are nowhere in ISlam.etc.etc. U try to tell these people "this is wrong and Unfair." they go n tell n u this has become a matter of their family pride.

family pride!!

N u know, I think a lot of hand in all this has been sectarinsim (sp?). Because different sects in Islam do not agree with each other (sometimes even on the basic things such as how to pray) these differences result in catasrophies like these.

So I guess, When we are talking about the Muslim community, we should first try to finish sectarinism. I try at my own level and it feels a lot of comfort for me when I see others doing it too.

N it is not as though Muslims don't speak out against terrorists and stuff.. They do. But the problem is, media pushes them so far behind sometimes even we, as Muslims miss looking at them.
May Allah bless you.

Here's my opinion - while I agree that some Muslims are speaking out, and that most Muslims (particularly those in Western countries) do not support terrorism at all, I also think that a lot of those Muslims are wasting their time on trivial things (Salman Rushdie, boycotting Danish cheese) when they could be speaking out against terrorism or teaching people what Islam is actually about.

But instead, they continue to waste their time on some mediocre book about Satanic verses.

Muslims quiet? Huh, has anyone heard of the incident with the newspaper in Norway? If not, search the net, you'll find it (look at the links). A brief of the story: A Norwegian newspaper published a simple cartoon (the daily ones) with a man with beard with a bomb on his head and called it Muhammad. What happened then? Do you think Muslims will keep quiet like Christians who make fun of Jesus themselves? Even Muslims do not make fun of Jesus, because we believe that he is a prophet of Allah and love him dearly. Anyways, all the Muslims ( mainly in the Middle East) stood together and boycott all products from Norway until today. Some supermarkets still do not sell their products. Countries asked Norway to apologize. First, they said it was freedom of speech, but then when they saw that Muslims were not accepting their answer, they apologized. Countries have forgiven them, but many people did not. Well, we know that all Norwegians are not like that, but we as Muslims were not happy with the government's decision supporting the newspaper at the beginning. What also happened that three Imams, from the Gulf and Egypt went to Norway and explained what Islam is all about and how we do not allow anyone to make fun of our Prophet, our teacher, our Father.

Yeah, Muslims are always quiet. Yeah, rrrright ;)

I'm not a Muslim but I think the answer applies to any religion. If your approach to trying to convince people is too loud, you'll turn off almost everybody. People will think something's wrong with you if you have trouble keeping your volume down, no matter what you're talking about.

People tend to listen more seriously to an argument when it's presented in a normal tone with intelligent points that are tough to dispute. That kind of environment lets them think about your point. Shoving your point of view down people's throats won't accomplish anything.

Below is an interview with Sheikh Hamza Yusuf, there is an effort to dislodge these idea in the community.

There is also a fatwa condemning bombing, we do speak out no one is listening.

The answer is simple. They have CNN, ABC, BBC etc. who are more powerful and have wider coverage than Muslim media. Those agencies are more interested to cover news about riots and bombings in Pakistan than peace demonstrations in Muslim countries. They reported about Khomeini's fatwa to kill Salman Rushdie, but did they ever have report about fatwa by Malaysian muftis that suicide-bombing is haram (forbidden)?

...campaign more strongly against the aberrant doctrines that underpin them...
it is the responsibility of the Islamic world to defeat the terrorist aberration theologically...

I don't often go to church, but I happened to go just after 9-11. The priest asked us to pray for not only those killed, but for innocent local Muslims who had nothing to do with the attack, who would now be the subject of intolerance. He asked this even after we had all seen footage on TV of Muslims around the world partying in the streets, celebrating their "victory".

I went again after the invasion of Iraq. My local Catholic priest, at the ground-roots level, condemned the US action. He was backed up in print by the Bishop of our city. There was, and still is universal condemnation from the Catholic church in my country, at all levels, at an action they describe as war resulting in the unnecessary killing of innocent civilians.

Well, the West is waiting. Not for articles from a British convert to Islam. Not for Muslims on YA. We are waiting to hear from your senior holy men, your Imams that hold sway over their congregations. Where is their voice to be heard ?

Well that's a good question in reply in my own words, I speak openly and yes put my foot in my mouth after woulds. Sometimes refrain from saying my bit and tough it .. **** happens, but generally speak of good and do my bit for this world and children of tomorrow. Yes respect the elderly. When my cup of wine is fall i will share my wealth.....Just a mere mortal and not a wasted consumer. As for women love my mother her mother and her mother, then the love of my life the partner I chose..... the children we bare the love of them and their children. I never hear or see any muslim authority ever speak out against terrorism and murder. I don't see millions of muslims protesting in the street either. But when a few cartoons appeared in an obscure local danish newspaper where printed I did see some action. It just showed the muslim priorities to me.
