Basically I want to know is it fair to own a dog even though one works full time, 5 days a week??

It would be okay, if you are 100% sure you can dedicate time before and after work to properly exercise and play with your dog. I would hire a dog walker to stop by in the middle of the time you are at work and walk your dog. Depending on where you live, you can usually get a half an hour walk for anywhere between $10-14. It's worth it... To be fair to the dog, you'd get up an extra hour early and walk your dog for at least a half hour before work so it is tired when you leave... Have plenty of toys for the dog while you are away... Have a dog walker come mid-day... Then when you get home, even if you're tired from work, it's out to walk the dog again. Dogs are a big responsibility. It's not fair to them to get one if you don't have the time or effort to care for them properly. Think it over, good luck.

Puppies shouldn't be left any longer than 4 hours. Older dogs can handle a little longer, but what a BORING life. Why would anyone get a dog only to leave it home alone all day???
Some breeds do better alone than others, make sure you do your research. I respect you and think you're smart because you are questioning the "fairness" to the dog. I know most people have to work during the day, just make sure you either hire someone to come take the dog out, or go home on your lunch hour and break up the day for your dog. They'll love you no matter what anyway, they're just the best pet in the world.
Good luck

When I was working full time my dog was alone for about 8 hours a day. I just made sure to play with him some in the morning and that he had enough water. I would also occasionally come home during my lunch to check on him. I don't work anymore though.

I work 7 on then 7 off. I have a roomie that lives with me, and either her or I one makes sure my dog gets to go out some. They need fresh air, plenty of sunshine, and of course water and food, and exercise just like people do. It also depends on the breed, size, etc. You don't want your dog to get overweight and not enough exercise. My dog is quite a bit mischevious so I don't leave him by himself in the house for very long, because if I did, my house would be a wreck! He has toys and such to play with, as well as constant access to plenty of food and water. It also depends on the size of your housing accomdations as to whether you should own a dog and to leave it alone for very long. Use your best judgment here. There is no right or wrong answer...you know what your situation is truly like.

Its doable with a little ingenuity - I have a dog door opening into a covered kennel run with the larger yard for exercise while I'm home. Dog walkers & day care are also possible solves. A placid adult may be fine simply in the house for 8 hrs...

Unless you can get a dog walker, it isn't right.
