I see on the internet that some doctors are against having tonsils removed whereas some say it makes no difference, do they have a use and what are the negatives for them no longer being there. Mine are quite large and I think they give me bad breath because of being infected and swollen alot, do they really make a difference?
Also someone told me tonsilitis is contageous, but I didn't think infections could be passed on, so is there truth in that as well?

The bad breath could be caused by tonsil stones or tonsiloliths, they will also cause the tonsil to swell and be painful sometimes... I have them as well. To see if you do, go to the mirror and use your finger to actually open the tonsil, if you see a white or yellow type of substance, then you have them. I used to get tonsillitis on a regular basis, but my doctor didn't want mine taken out. Since I started cleaning out the pockets of stones, I haven't had it in almost 2 years. Your tonsils do serve a purpose too, they are there to trap bacteria and infection from going further into your throat, but when removed there are usually no complications or adverse reactions. And yes, tonsillitis is contagious, highly.

I had my tonsils taken out when I was 10 years old because I stayed sick all the time with sore throats, sinus problems, and ear infections growing up. I found out later that tonsils are just a gland that we don't need and can function without. After having them removed I got better and haven't been sick since. Every once in a while I get a cold during winter but its not so serious that I am hospitalized or have to miss work or school.

You should get them taken out because all they are is a trap for any virus.

As far as bad breath, that would have to do with your teeth. Believe it or not your teeth can cause you to get sick as well especially mess with your sinus problems. I had my eye teeth pulled out and it helped out a lot. The best thing for bad breath is Scope or some kind of mouth wash.

So to answer your question, YES it does make a difference whether you have your tonsils or not. Get them taken out.

Here is a serious suggestion to heal your tonsils.

Swish about three times a day with HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. It is very healing for any oral odor or infection or discomfort. A diseased mouth is the cause of bad breath.

I have used it for 40 year on recommendation of my Dentist.
The first time was for strep, since then sore gums or gingivitis, painful root after a crown and cancer sores. I brush with it almost daily to keep my gums healthy.

It is quite amazing stuff. Just take a small swig and in your case try to gargle it and spit it out. Try not to rinse. It will bubble out and heal the bacteria and infection in your tonsils and gums.

The pain and discomfort goes away surprisingly quickly.

Oh yes my Husband and I have had ours out as children and our children have not had theirs out. So go figure.

Good Luck.

first of all, the mouth is something like an "open wound" and so our organism has developed ways to protect itself.. one of those ways are the tonsils... so if you have them removed you will lose a part of the protection... so if your tonsilitis responds to a cure with medicines it is best to keep them and try to cure them with the help of your doctor, of course... if it s no more curable then its best to remove them...
now to answer your last questiom, i have never heard about contageous tonsilitis but if the tonsils are infected by other diseases then they may be contageous...
