Wow...there are a lot of versions of history floating around on this thread...most of them jacked up, but oh well.

Anyway...

My opinion is that both the Democratic and Republican candidates for President will each have an exit strategy for Iraq. Not having one will make that candidate unelectable...Now, whether or not that candidate will actually put that strategy into place once elected is a completely different story.

The problem in Iraq is that we are spending billions of dollars rebuilding their country and training their police and military forces, yet these forces are still not able to do their jobs properly. Why not? I don't know...we can take an American kid from the suburbs, train him for 6 months and send him over there to die for someone else's country, but for whatever reason, the Iraqi people who are battle hardened from living in a constant state of war and violence for the past few generations, are not up to the task. No wonder we beat them so easily.

The powers that be (General Petreus and the President, along with the SECDEF) are now talking about us being in Iraq for 10 or more years...this will not surprise me, no matter who wins the election.

The paradox with this, of course, is that the Middle East will go up in flames even more than it already is if they find out that Americans are building permanent bases. Trust me, if this had been Japan or Korea, the bases would already be built, and we would already have stationed 2-3 divisions there permanently. The fact that this is the middle east and the culture (at least right now) will not allow for it is why this has not been done.

What remains is that despite the over a billion dollars spent this year in bonuses and other incentives, we're having a tough time keeping our military at strength, and despite the best efforts of the warplanners, we're running out of troops to rotate in-out of Iraq, even on the 15 month rotations. We need to go ahead and shift at least 2-3 divisions, if not an entire Corps or two to Iraq on a permanent basis and make it a 1 year hardship tour for Soldiers that they will have maybe 2-3 times in their entire career. I know folks who are going over there for the 3rd time in 5 years, which just isn't right, and makes them not want to reenlist.

Thus...to recap. Both candidates will have an exit strategy, it probably won't actually be utilized after the election, and chances are we'll be in Iraq until long after I retire from the Army.

This is the reason we are becoming a nation with two side. People that always have to view they point with out any morales. Cut and Run, bud I dont know if you have seen or really heard what is going on over there. When was the last time you really looked at what was happening. Lies put this country into a war that should of never happened. If you are a cons, then you do understand what lie means dont you. shesh.

We are going to be in Iraq for as long as the cons party allows us to be. I guess that cons poster just does not want to open his eyes to the mess you all have created over there. Why not change it up because nothing Bush is doing is working. I just dont understand why the cons party does not want to look at option. With out change and growth, you have death and decay. One plus One equals two and that is all we are getting out of Iraq.

Funny how the libs have talked about option and yet the only reply to options is cons saying cut and run. How many more of are troops have to die because you will not look at option cons party.

We should bring our troops home and close most overseas bases, especially in Germany and Japan. Then, use the money saved to seal the southern border and try to lower the deficit.

Unfortunately, the Democrats are on the inside what the Republicans are on the outside, so we will be in Iraq no matter what.

I will not fight a war to better the lives of people that I care nothing about. We gain nothing from Iraq. Not even oil.

Israel is the benefiting party.

for sure that is going to. seem on the effect of the Vietnam war on elections. many applicants have been thrown with the help of the wayside basically with the help of effectively labeling them as set off happy with bombs. For some reason, this usa had develop into enamored with warmongering. that must be because of the fact our 'dark masters' are warmongers and warlords and lords of war. Our strikes in Iraq have jeopardized the protection of united statesa.. there'll probable be important blowback in my estimation.

Very Prescient!

I fear you are correct and we will never leave the mideast. Since Sadam's attack on Kuwait in Aug 1990 we have had a huge miltitary presence and and have been engaged in a running fight with nations and terrorists. The liberal press just avoided mentioning most of it while Clinton was in Office.

it depends on whos elected. if a liberal extremist like ms. clinton is elected you will see the full force and effect of the cowardice of the pelosi/reid fegimes cut and run as the middle east will turn into chaos and al qaeda will reappear here in the us. surrender and retreat will definitely have its price and sadly the liberals will continue to attempt to use the defense of this country as they did with the iraq spending bill for pork barrel and power grab gain.

We'll still be there, but the media will report us as "winning" in Iraq from the moment a Democrat is inaugurated.

Why are United States troops still in Germany, Japan and France? We won that war more than Sixty years ago.
