I hope not! What do you think of this?

"Do you beat your own wife as you would a slave? That must you not do.

I (Muaviyah b. Haidah) said, "O Apostle of God! What is my duty to my wife?" He said, "That you give her to eat as you eat yourself, and clothe her as you clothe yourself; and do not slap her in the face nor abuse her, nor separate yourself from her in displeasure.

Give your wife good counsel; and if she has goodness in her, she will soon take it, and leave off idle talking; and do not beat your noble wife like a slave.

Muhammad said, "Beat not your wives." Then Omar came to the Rasul (Muhammad) and said, "Wives have got the upper hand from hearing this."

He is the most perfect Muslim whose disposition is best; and the best of you are they who behave best to their wives."

Nope. My former wife did a couple of things that could drive a man to want to beat her up, but I'd get my daughter and go out. I don't feel a man should fight with women in general and their wife in particular because nothing good comes from it.
I use the Prophet (SAW) as gauge to where I'm going in regards to how I'm suppose to be as a Muslim.

I like the question-Up front and blunt.

Beating in Quraan does mean "hit" but it differs from situation to another. There's an incident where Aisha disobeyed the prophet in one event and he was right while she was wrong, he took his stick and touched her on the arm, showing that he was not happy about it. You know that in Islam, a woman is damned if she disobeys her husband, but there are limits. This is where people mix up things and others get confused. It is clearly stated that disobeying a husband is wrong if the husband was right, for example if he told her not to go out with her friend (having a good reason) or other things. People take it that she has to be his slave which is not the case. Beating here also is the same concept. It is recommended for men to make it clear to their women that when they disobey, that they do not like it. They can either show it by giving them a look, or walking away or as it is stated to hit. Muhammad (PBUH) precisely answered the questions for some Muslims that the hit should not hurt, it should be just like a warning or a sign that the wife is wrong. The hit should not be to the face or any sensitive area. But yes, Daraba in Quraan means "beat" or "hit". Wallahu A'alam

I agree that physical violence in any way shape or form is abhorrent, by why then, do the men that follow Jihad beat their wives if they do not wear hijab? I watched a documentary on Jihad, the men interviewed said it was "a bunch of foolishness" for women to have equal rights as the men, and that they would hit their wife or any woman who refused to wear a hijab. They said the highest pinnacle of Islam is Jihad. Is it any wonder when we see and hear things like this that we get the wrong impression of Islam, it is good to see and hear the positive side, as you have quoted, rather than just the negatives all the time.

No man of any religion should beat his wife. Even if men and women are not equal in all ways (I'll leave that up to the individual to determine), they are equal in the sense that they both deserve the utmost respect from one another, particularly in a marital relationship.

And no, my husband doesn't beat me, although I'm not so sure about his relationship with our cat...JUST KIDDING!

I find it ironic that muslim men will copy the prophet in all his manners, such as how he dressed, how he hate, how he groomed himself, how he greeted people and how he did a million other things as a muslim.....yet they prefer to ignore the fact that he had the utmost respect for women....preferred to be in the company of women.....and seeked their counsel on many occassions....and most importantly, never raised a hand to any of his wives or women in his life. This they choose to ignore.....God help them who believe the will of man is stronger than the will of God

I went through years of abuse from my ex-husband. It was aweful, and I thank God I am free of it and him. I won't be someones slave ever again.

No! My husband follows the Qur'an and he loves, honors and respects me. He would never hurt me in any way. Alhemdulilah.

Yes of course.

My wife cooks, cleans, keeps my schedule, etc. Does it matter that I'm a girl? Haha okay, totally stupid post, and given the fact that I'm high on caffeine right now, totally expected. Hey its 2am.

But this is why women leave religion, they're treated as second-class citizens and I could never come to accept as a xtian that I wasn't an equal. I just couldn't. So I left it and now I'm happy without gods and without masters, yea!
