Silly question, but I'm trying to see if I really need a passport. An acquiantance said I don't but I'm sceptical.

yes you do and as Switzerland is not in the EU, if your not British or Eu, you might need a visa, check with the swiss embassy

Every Flight these days because of Terrorism, no matter if domestic (in the UK) or international (including the whole of the EU) requires a passport. They will not accept a drivers license or other form of Identification it must be a passport.

Yes, you will need one. You probably can't get on a plane without. Switzerland is not part of the EU.
Although there are no border controls between the countries which signed the Schengen agreement you need to have a passport with you.

You are right to be sceptical your friend is completely wrong you need a passport to get enter any country from another country the exception is going from England to Scotland wales or southern Ireland

Of course you do. You need a passport to travel anywhere from the UK as we don't have ID cards. You certainly can't travel throughout Europe with some form of ID as one respondent suggests.

If you are a UK Resident then you will pleased to know that you can travel throughout Europe ( including Switzerland ) without a passport. However if you are not living in UK then you will definitely need your passport. I hope this answers your question
