points to something they are doing against the Bible.

Common excuses I have heard are:
(I added my replies to these excuses)

"You're taking it out of context"
-Well then post the entire context and prove me wrong

"All my sins are forgiven and so that doesn't apply to me"
-Is the air up there fresh on that pedestal you climbed on?

"I know what the Bible says and I am right"
-If you knew what it says then you wouldn't be using it 'against' people

Well, I could go on and on with examples. Is it just basic arrogance or am I missing something?

Isn't it funny how the interpretations are twisted to suit the quoter?
I am a Christian and I have seen this done, and possibly done this myself many times.
Now I try to keep my mouth shut until I look at the scripture from all possible angles.

Because many of the quotes are taken out of context to try to prove the Bible or the Christian is in the wrong. What many don't understand, or choose to ignore, is that the number system of the Bible is arbitrary. It was established by a man sitting on a train as a system for people to use as a reference when talking about the Bible. It was done without concern for context. As a result people often take part of a subject and use it in isolation from the entire passage. It would be like taking the third line from the Declaration of Independence (not the third sentence, the third line) and declaring that line to be the complete thought of the Declaration.

The last two are definitely signs of basic arrogance. The one about taking things out of context is ironically what you are accusing Christians of doing when you say that some quote the Bible when it serves them and other times make excuses. Both Christians and non Christians do a good job of taking things out of context when it comes to the Bible.

Demopublican, we keep running into each other. I like your style. lol

Anywho, I myself am hesitant to follow the New Testament as it seemingly refutes the Old Testament. I always ask, why would God say something then take it back? Sure Jesus died for our sins and all, but that surely doesn't void out half of the bible!

Just my thoughts when applying my own logic. I'm not righteous and I know very well I could be very wrong. So that's my slice. Good question though!

This has happened often, true. And those of whom you speak have usually chosen the path of hypocrisy. Again, those doing this are usually the overly-preachy types; aggressiveness doesn't win people over. (Not everyone will fit this mold, however.)

Add to the list: those who claim their book is the literal word of their deity.
Why add to the list: because if it is the literal word, then the deity never used spell check and it isn't HARD to write clearly and distinctly.

You forgot to add the multitude of "sins" that Christ wrote out of consideration upon being sacrificed. That clears a lot of ground.

I've never yet encountered a Christian who said that Christ's sacrifice "fulfilled" the injunction against homosexuality though, oddly.

Some people like to hide behind God or the Bible only when it is convenient for them. Sad but true.

Conveinient isnt it? The variety of views on the meaning of religious texts is why there are so many off shoots of mainstram religions. Because theyre so subjective to the readers own interpretation theyre easy to justify the readers own opinions.

Your not missing anything. The people you are refering to are missing something. They are not Christians. Chances are you've never meet one. Christians don't lie, drink, have sex outside of marriage,. Heck let me make it easy for you. SIT NO EVIL THING BEFORE THINE EYE. We don't even watch T.V. We don't go to bars. And we don't expect you to live up to our standards. It is useless to quote the bible to a sinner. We don't judge sinners. We try to save them. Christian women don't wear makeup. Its sexually appealling. They don't wear pants. Don't wear anything pertaining to the man. They don't cut thier hair. A womans hair is her glory and she finds favor with the angels. YOUR BIBLE QUOTERS AREN'T CHRISTIANS. There are millions of people who think they are Christians but are not. Untill you meet a real one, just don't ask.
