By some estimates, seven out of 10 Americans with pets let them sleep in bed with the human familyAll mammals need a certain amount of hours of sleep per day that is phylogentically evolutionary development and history of a species and biologically related to how efficient of a hunter their ancestors were and hibernation patterns during the winter," Dogs were efficient hunters and didn't take as long as humans to stalk, catch and eat their prey, and therefore had more time to sleep, about 10-16 hours per day." How Dogs Think" and a sleep expert for both pets and people says that middle-aged dogs sleep an average of 14-16 hours per day. older pets can sleep much more than that. dogs sleep anywhere from 10 to 13 hours per day.
For example, a dog living as an only pet inside of a house may sleep much more than a dog that spends the day outdoors working on a farm. Also, some breeds are more energetic than others, while aging pets may need more rest than pets in their middle age."
"A 2-year-old basset hound likely sleeps more than Irish setter of similar age," , certified animal behaviorist in Denver, and co-author of the award winning "Raising A Behaviorally Healthy Puppy."
9-year-old Dalmatian is quite content to nap on couches or on beds near peoples desk, Besides breed and age differences, pets are very adaptive in their sleep.
"Dogs are meant to be night hunters so they get up and move around at night we just aren't awake to see it. Like human beings, pets will sleep more if given the opportunity, but they don't have to sleep that long," "For example, a working dog, a herder, may only sleep 10 hours per day whereas the same dog if put in an urban setting might sleep 16. Dogs follow the pulse of humanity."
Even weather can change a dog's sleep as pets will tend to sleep more on cloudy days than sunny ones, snuggle up more on cold days than warm ones. Just like humans, not all sleep is the same for pets. Very often the dog is really napping, not in the deepest stages of sleep. they speak predators. dogs sleep more than prey animals squirrels and mice and they tend to sleep deeper.
i know thiers a lot of answers but i hope this helps

it depends on so many different factors such as environment, breed, sex and age of the pet,"

Theoretically dusk till dawn. Though basically when they want to and when there is nothing else going on. A working dog for instance can be on the go 8-10 hours a day with just a doze now and then. A house dog will probably be lively when there is something going on and settle down when there isn't. Some breeds are known for their inactivity and others for their seeming hyperactivity. All in all there is no such thing as normal only whats usual for your dog.

I have a 14 year old poodle who is pretty much retired and loves to sleep, when she wants to she will try to play. My other dog is 2 years old will sleep more at night and some during the day if I am home. He doesn't sleep as much as the poodle but he does love the bed when he can get there. I think it's normal, i've never had a vet ask me if our animals have slept to much.

dogs in the wild can sleep 18 hours a day, so even though your dog is a house dog, the instinct is to sleep lots. I think 15 hours a day is okay, usually up and down.

There are many factors::
breed of dog
age of dog,
activity level
health of dog.
Taht's like saying how much would each person in the family nevr the less the world would sleep different people just as dogs sleep different amounts of time.

My dogs doze on and off all day. They're lively one minute and happily snoozing the next. It all depends on what's happening around them. After going out for exercise they always come in and settle and sleep. I think this is all normal behaviour, of course, if your dog is constantly drowsy and doesn't want to wake and participate with anything, that's another matter and should be checked with your vet.

My dog takes naps at random times. He can be running around hyper and playing and lie down two seconds later dosing off... then if you mention his "toy" he's back up running around again. I don't know the "average" per say, but I think it depends more on how active they are and how often their owner keeps them busy by walking or playing. The more the dog is alone and doing nothing, the more it will sleep.

Hmm...I think my dogs sleep quite a lot. They get their 45 minute playtime at the garden twice a day...apart from that....they will be sleeping most of the time

all depends on the dog, weather outside. if its hot they will sleep more. if a puppy, or older dog they sleep more. my two dogs, one is 12 and one is 5 sleep quiet a bit, especially after play time. in hot weather, if overly excited. all depends! and its all normal.
