An engineering professor is treating her husband, a loan officer, to dinner for finally giving in to her pleas to shave off the scraggly beard he grew on vacation. His favorite restaurant is a casual place where they both feel comfortable in slacks and cotton/polyester-blend golf shirts. But, as always, she wears the gold and pearl pendant he gave her the day her divorce decree was final. They're laughing over their menus because they know he always ends up diving into a giant plate of ribs but she won't be talked into anything more fattening than shrimp.

Quiz: How many biblical prohibitions are they violating? Well, wives are supposed to be 'submissive' to their husbands (I Peter 3:1). And all women are forbidden to teach men (I Timothy 2:12), wear gold or pearls (I Timothy 2:9) or dress in clothing that 'pertains to a man' (Deuteronomy 22:5). Shellfish and pork are definitely out (Leviticus 11:7, 10) as are usury (Deuteronomy 23:19), shaving (Leviticus 19:27)

and clothes of more than one fabric (Leviticus 19:19). And since the Bible rarely recognizes divorce, they're committing adultery, which carries the rather harsh penalty of death by stoning (Deuteronomy 22:22).

So why are they having such a good time? Probably because they wouldn't think of worrying about rules that seem absurd, anachronistic or - at best - unrealistic. Yet this same modern-day couple could easily be among the millions of Americans who never hesitate to lean on the Bible to justify their own anti-gay attitudes.

This would be true... If Jesus hadn't come to earth and died for us. These rules no longer apply. The world in which the people lived in those times were much different and you have to look at the context.
"or dress in clothing that 'pertains to a man" - This was not allowed at the time because in the same city there were many transvestites which definatly is a sin against God.
"Shellfish and pork are definitely out" - At the time these foods were seen as unclean, unlike today where these foods are now cleans very safely.
"And all women are forbidden to teach men" - This also applies to a certain church in the Bible, in which the women were causing trouble and speaking against God's word.

So you see you cannot just take one look at these verses and understand them immediatly. You must remember that the bible was written 2000+ years ago and much of it applies to specific groups due to much of it being in the form of letters to churches. However it doesn't mean we cannot use these parts to learn from.

Your biblical prohibitions are out of context. Submission is not subservience. A wife is not her husband's slave nor is she expected to cower before him. She is expected to use her mind and have opinions as well as needs.

Women are suppose to tell their husbands about things they have learned. The Bible actually tells men to listen to their wives.

The wearing of jewelry is not prohibited as you suggest. That verse is directed toward a specific group of people in a specific culture of the time. The women of that culture wore jewelry as a sign of their service to other gods.

The dietary rules in the Old Testament were for the protection of people who had no way to properly prepare or preserve some types of food. Modern science has long ago given us the reasons behind the prohibitions. God also told Peter it was alright to eat many of the food that were previously prohibited because the technology had improved over the millennium since the dietary rules were established.

You are referring to violations of prohibitions that were given specifically to the Israel's people until they were given a king. They lived in a society that was controlled by God through priests directly. Then the people cried and asked for a king and they were given Saul. There are many things that must be taken into consideration.

There are also different types of commandements. there are also ritual laws and moral laws and they are treated differently.

Jesus says, "I came not to destroy the law but to fulfill it."

He was/is referring to the laws of Moses (The 10 Commandments) and Hebrew law concerning the strict social behavior, diet, financial disciplines, and proper behavior of men and women in general.

Your Biblical references mix and intermingle Old Testament law and New Testament grace which Jesus brought with him and taught and which for Christians supercedes and/or absolves people of all previous Old Testament bylaws.

Jesus Christ says, "I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, & THE LIFE, no one comes to The Father but by ME."

Meaning before Jesus mankind was "under the law" and was judged accordingly during life on Earth and after they died.

After Jesus came to Earth, people who choose Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior are now living "under grace" and are saved through the shed blood of Jesus Christ on Calvary, " NOT by Old Testament law.
