Because they are rude people.
Same as: why do clowns tailgate people. I'm only going to drive slower....and slower....and wow! 4mph! woot!
Not all atheists are rude, but you seem to have attracted the ones who are. For that, I'll apologize for them. (I doubt that it will do anything, however.) And yes, I am an athiest.
I have no problem with you or anyone else choosing or speaking about a faith, just as long as you remember I get to "choose" what I want too.

I'm not saying all atheists are in this camp, but there sure seem to be the vocal ones who are absolutely sure they got it right. I don't think that this is much different than the Christians who are equally as sure. The disease is the same. It's that need to have a certain, well defined world. The atheists use words like "facts" and "proven", which indicates they don't know much about science, and the Christians point to the Bible as though it were fundamentally different from any other book and written by God.
I believe some of it is narcissism and some of it is defense. I think some people believe that if they don't come from a position of absoluteness they will be attacked and destroyed, and will then be forced to agree with the attacker. If my view isn't perfect then it is all wrong. This is the defensive part.
Then there is the narcissistic part that says I have to be right were others are wrong. I need to be special. And I can't see that just because it makes sense to me doesn't mean that the enitre universe should see it this way too. I can't, or refuse to see that I might have some things wrong. Because to be wrong means I 'm a bad person. Two kinds of people in this world, those in the know and walk with the Gods, and the pathetic loosers(heathens or lost sheep in the Christian world) who just don't see the light or don't get it.
I think the attacks either come from the need for narcissistic supply(need for constant validation), and perhaps there was an opressive Christian person in their life, who they're afraid to tell them what they think or are dead, and they displace the anger onto you.

Why do people act so rude? Because they lack courtesy and they are treating this forum like a game, rather than an attempt at debate.
However, to consider your example question "What is a good way to witness?". As it's posted on this open forum is asking for replies by non-Christians as well as Christians. Generally, non-Christians don't like being preached at. We have our own beliefs and when you preach at us, you are not respecting them. In my opinion, the best way to witness is to lead by example. Christians should demonstrate to all of us non-Christians the way of the Christ by their example. From the replies I've seen on this forum from professed devout Christians, they're just as bad as those posts by professed atheists, if not worse.
In conclusion, maybe people here need to show common courtesy a bit more and treat everyone with a little respect. You never know, you might learn something new. Isn't that the real point of this forum?

Because they are being "inspired" by the devil and the devil doesn't want anybody witnessing about the goodness of the Lord. And some people just throw off on stuff they don't understand. But I agree, it is very rude. If a person doesn't believe in God, that is their choice, so I don't understand why they want to answer questions in the Religion and Spirituality section because they are neither. It is just another trick of Satan to try to get at the Christians.

Some people just ranting and raving, you could ask a question about peanut butter and the bible this happens. It could be one of those Group Think fallaces, that's a toughie because there isn't athiest churches though, but Group Think is one of the top ten fallaces of all time. So like if a church person thinks what the group says is the right way of doing something despite whatever goes against their congregation thinking that's how an athiest person could be thinking... if I went on about how this works my mind would prolly go into one of those vortex thingies.

I am a former Christian but I think you make a good point the hostility is overwhelming at times.
I also understand the anger many feel toward Christians because some people claiming to be Christian go into other areas of YA and make extremely rude and at times vulgar comments. That of course does not justify the trolling for Christians that goes on in R&S

To be fair, you're asking your question on a public forum that isn't specialised to the topic (all questions appear in the big list on the front page) where anyone with an account can answer. Do you really think that anyone who disagrees with your ideals (particularly preaching your religion to people who don't care) isn't going to speak his/her mind on the matter? It's kind of like trying to speak above everybody in a crowd and telling everyone who disagrees to shut up.
I don't mean to seem inflammatory here but if you want a specialised answer from people who aren't going to criticise you then go to a specialised forum.

I don't know, as long as you aren't trying to force your religion on somebody else, I don't see why they would even care. I know I don't. The only time I get pissed off is when Christians (or whatever religion) try and make me believe what they do and continually tell you that if you don't believe you'll go to Hell, as if they are God himself. It even got to the point where priests came over to my house, that's enough to pisss someone off right there though. But yeah, they're more than likely just some ******* teenager that hates the world, so don't worry to much about it.

Most of the atheists or other people who respond in such a manner don't understand the theory of: If you don't like the question, don't answer it! Also, many of those people are probably trolls trying to be important or some such.
It's interesting, considering I answer many questions about many different faiths (from Christianity to Buddhism), but I'm an atheist at heart. Don't let them bother you, but I imagine posting things like these will only liven up the uneducated trolls.

Some will say "because they are pushed by Satan (this is why they're atheists, anyway)", other will say "because Christians are trying to impose their religion on people who have no religion", others will say "because they have nothing else to do; they have no God, they're empty, they just wait to bash somebody" and I say "because there are bad atheists and good atheists and you were unlucky enough to bump into some bad ones, but the majority of them are just like us: kind people who happen to believe that there is no God".
