I am a very strong Roman Catholic. However, I love metal and dark metal music. I realize that some of the messages in these songs are considered unholy and even satanic. I like the music for the sound, not the message whatsoever. Am I a contradiction to myself through this? Is listening to the music for just the music bad? I feel like when I listen to it I am sinning. Let me know what you think!

Yes, it is a contradiction. Jesus said, no man can serve God and mammon, he will either love the one or hate the other. Can you still say you love God when you listen to that kind of music?

May the Lord's peace be with you!

You have properly differentiated between the genre of music and the lyrics. As it so happens, heavy metal music is more conducive to anti-God themes than other genres.

This does not mean that heavy metal instrumentals, in and of itself is bad. God gave mankind the creativity to invent all different types of music. We can safetly assume God loves all sorts of music. However, He may not love what some people have done with certain genres, and this is where we have to be careful.

I went to a Christian concert a couple of summers ago. They had, among other things, heavy metal Christian music, even Christian rap music if you can imagine.

Music, in and of itself, is an art form. Some strikes your fancy, some of it does not. Instrumental music of any genre is morally neutral in my opinion. It's the lyrics ascribed to certain songs that define it as morally good or bad.

I'm still not one for really listening to lyrics. I listen for how the singer's voice meshes with the instruments, not necessarily what the singer is actually saying. But that's just me.

I notice these things now because I am a family man and listen to my music in the living room in front of the whole family. Every so often, when I play one of my older CDs or something, I have to jump out of my seat and shut it off, for the kids' sake, because I never realized even after all this time, what some of the lyrics were actually saying.

I can't really say that it's wrong to listen to all heavy metal music, even when the lyrics are promoting an anti-God/pro-satanic message UNLESS that message is adversely effecting your spiritual health.

Having said that, I think if you dig heavy metal music as well as your Catholic heritage you might want to consider some heavy metal Christian rock music. That would be the best way to go.

I'll avoid an anti-Christian rant for the sake of those reading.

Why would you feel as though you are "sinning"? Because you like a type of music loosely associated with some religion other than your own? Don't want to insult, but that sounds pretty narrow-minded.

There are plenty of heavy metal bands without any religious themes whatsoever, and some of them are very good. Good luck in your search, and I hope you find something you like and that agrees with your ideology.

Keep it metal!

Yeah, you shouldn't listen to music with lyrics that are satanic or even songs with cursing. Even though you are listening to their sound the lyrics are still pouring into you. You know the words, even if you don't believe them it'll still be in your brain. It's like inviting Satan to come for dinner willing him to tempt you. You know how a song may just jump into your head, or an image? If we don't allow them in, they can't catch us off guard.

The bible does help us in our discernment: check out Collossians 2:8, Ephesians 4:29 and 5:3-4, 2nd Corinthians 6:14-7:1 and Matthew 12:33-37. And as I tell all my Catholic friends, "Read the bible and see what it says,"

I dislike heavy rock, but I'd at least listen to the Christian rock to see if the sound hold up. give it a shot.

I don't think it's a problem. I used to listen to it, but I found Hardcore metal Christian bands like Demon Hunter, Norma Jean, Extol, Flyleaf, and/or Zao (I'm not sure if they consider themselves Chirstian, but It's kinda obvious with songs like "Praise the war machine" and "Angel without wings.") I just love to rock, but I also love to worship. There a great combination. Try this site {www.godcore.com} , you'll find all the Christian Heavy Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, and Hardcore bands you want. :)

There is nothing wrong with the style of music, but if the lyrics offend you, I would suggest finding some different bands to listen to. There's many of them out there. Sanctuary International, I think, not only has an online radio with harder rock music, they also have lists of bands.

Best of luck with your search. =^-^=

Edit: SI is a Christian site with Christian metal bands.
