1) He will do best when his stress level is low and he can perform at his own speed without demands on him to perform.

2) Believe it or not, a video game. I was able to improve my concentration and focus and memory by daily using a game called Super Bounce Out (matching colored balls) Following an injury in 2001 I would go to the computer and find myself more and more able to deal with 1st the game and 2nd calming and focusing my mind.

Unfortunately if the parts of his temporal lobes where memory is located are damaged there isn't really much you can do. I'm sure you've already done this, but possibly get some updated MRI's of that area of the brain and the doctor can tell you how much it's deteriorated. Maybe you can have him write things down as they happen if he's able to write. Record important things on videos. Keep a diary yourself of things. Most importantly, work with the people who are helping him in rehab, they may have some techniques they use to help people with memory loss.

How old is he and is it his short term memory or long term memory that is bad? For long term can go through the family album and your diary over and over as well as flipping through and talking abut what is in old issues of Time magazine. For recent memory simply play anagrams, card games or monopoly. I do not believe Alzheimer's meds would do any good.
