Good question.

Pride like this can only lead to problems. And what is it, exactly, for which so many people unite? It is more often than not the simple sense of being in this place. Somehow your own existence there and subsequent knowledge of it make it a better place. Yes, this is a form of ethnocentrism, and it is especially dangerous for particular kinds of government. This kind of pride also begs to be manipulated - as by the media - and only allows same-thinking people into its ranks. If one is not part of this group, one is regarded as a traitor, terrorist, coward, etc.

You might say that nationalism is good because it unites people under a cause, but the cause must be examined for goodness first. Unification has no inherent moral purpose, nor direction, nor conclusion.

Nationalism grows out of wishing to throw off the oppressive yoke of a foreign power. Once a national identity is established a nation can deal with other countries on an equal footing and group together for mutual benefit.

Imposition of order = escalation of disorder

Nationalism gives us an identity and is sinilar to a form of individualism. Before nationalism we had city states fifdoms and such. Smaller units each with its own leaders and rules ( Much like a street gang) The idea of nationalism gives each individual an identity beyond just themselves or their family which helps them identify and find similarities with others. ( Where in the world did that person come up with nationalism and national socialists?)

Apart from the bad reasons?

There's the nationalism "from below"
"Deutschland uber alles", is not, though it is often taken as, a claim that the nation of Germany is superior to others, but a statement that the nation should arise out of different sub-national factions and states.
Anti-German WW2 propaganda portrayed it differently, and the Nazi regime did little to deny that particular slur, as it suited them.

The corresponding American sentiment is "E pluribus unum"

And the truth of that sentiment is clear, in that internally divided and factionalised countries face immense problems.

The "My nation is better than yours" nationalism, however, has little going for it.

Have you ever believed in a cause? I think most of us have. It may be something small, maybe large, but we all have at some point in our life a dedication to something. With nationalism, I think those who support it are supporting the idea of the perfect nation. Though the nation they rally behind may have countless flaws (and what nation doesn't?) they are striving to uphold the ideal of what that nation could be. Perfection is impossible to attain on Earth, but we still dream of it after all.

Well, it's a form of ethnocentrism, and is the sign of a healthy culture essentially. In order for a culture to remain stable, they have to view themselves as having the best way of doing things as a whole (otherwise they'd try to change to whatever what they viewed as a better way would be, they could of course alternatively think every way is equally valid, but this hasn't occured in practice). Nationalism is a result of all of this.

As a citizen, it is good to love your country and be a nationalist. But the problem starts when you go to far, like Hitler's German Nationalism. You will end up like those monsters (Hitler & mussoloni as example) a controller freak!
