With most of them, especially if you're unskilled, the problem for a lot of people is boredom. In some factories, you sit in one place, which may be cold in the winter and hot in the summer, and pick up a part. You look at the part, maybe measure it, and put it back on the conveyor. Repeat, ad nauseum. Some people are , okay with this, some aren't. Maintenance jobs repairing machines or maintaining them are more interesting, and sometimes pay better, but you usually need some experience to start. Nobody wants to see anybody blow themselves up touching something they don't understand.
The bigger the factory, the better the job is probably going to be. Places with big unions gobble up some of your check, but have long-standing agreements in place that help you in terms of pay, safety, retirement, etc. This is a better situation, and for many people, it's the best choice.
If you can, go back to school, and do something boring, or if you're lucky, something interesting, in corporate America. It pays better, and you'll have more options.
