Everyday there's these kids that come on here after years of the brainwas........going to church, and are just falling apart saying how they are losing touch with God and all the other stuff that makes me throw up a little when I read it.

But in 6 months here, I have never seen an atheist be unsure, and start to think "Hey, maybe the Christians were right."

Anybody with half a brain that is capable of critical thinking should realize that they never have all the answers and that they should be constantly questioning their belief systems.

I'm a freethinker, but here's how I think it goes.
Christians believe in a God they cannot see, unless they encountered a miracle or something and God appeared to them in broad daylight. As humans, we all have the tendency to doubt what we cannot see, or hear. When their prayers go unanswered, they would start to lose faith as well.
Atheists, on the other hand, don't believe in God at all. Therefore, they are pretty much sure that they are controlling their own lives. And since nothing life-changing like surviving from an usually fatal accident happens to most people, then there's no incentive for them to change their thinking, because they believe that whatever happens is a result of their own carelessness.
That's what I feel. Christians lose faith more easily because it's easier to say "Hey, maybe there is no God", than to say "Hey, maybe I'm wrong and God caused such things to happen" when you don't believe in God in the first place!

You need to understand the fact that atheism isn't a faith, it is a total denial of faith. How can you say that you are starting to not believe in nothing.
But more profoundly when you do start finding a belief in something, you don't go searching in other places for it, you go directly to it. Just as an alcoholic wouldn't come on here looking to drink, someone who just found faith in god would be proclaiming it in person to the people who helped them... in person and not hiding behind a keyboard.

Because atheism as you know, is a lack of faith. There is no two ways, about it. Those who disbelieve, do not waver, on the issue. They are adamant that there is no, God. As for Christians, I can not say. I have yet, to have this conversation, with one. However, and I could be wrong, most Christians base their beliefs, on where they are at in their faith, at the time. Does that make sense, to you?

maybe because they do not have a church that is constantly threatening them with eternal damnation.
They don't have controversy over archaic church edicts colliding with the technological age we live in
There are no inane rules to follow ie: cannot eat this, cannot do that.
They are not constantly being brainwashed by popes or priests etc that their god IS ALL THAT
I simply cannot believe that there is some invisible gut in the sky who knows if I am good or bad and who knows all
Santa Claus?

It is easy. Atheists don't believe in a fictional supreme being who micro-manages every aspect of every person's life.
How many adults do you see who think that maybe they were mistaken and that Santa Claus is real? There is as much evidence for the existence of Santa Claus as there is for God.

theottawa1959:
Prove to me that Santa Claus or the tooth fairy are not real.

Seen your response. Have you considered the possibility that there is a scientific explanation for the existence of the universe that has not been discovered yet?
I can appreciate that you are asking complex questions. I am always very skeptical of simple answers to complex questions. Saying "God did it" is taking the easy way out. If Newton simply said "God did it" when he say the apple falling from the tree we would not have had the Theory of Gravitation (at least Newton would not have developed it).
If you do believe in God, why do you believe in the same God your parents believe and not one of the thousands of other Gods in the history of human civilization (names such as Thor and Odin spring to mind)?

strange. I've never ever ever said that.

nor have I ever cared about losing touch with god, because i'm pretty sure when i was 10 and i was sitting in bed thinking, DON'T SELL MY SOUL or in a church during a special stomp or w/e and they call people up and say 'if you haven't come to church you will go to hell!" or "If you dont come up here RIGHT NOW then you will go to hell!" and then i went into 7th grade a few years later and i was atheist in mid 7th grade.

never questioned being not an atheist, ever since.

FIRM EVOLUTIONIST.

and i was an atheist BEFORE I learned evolution

actually WAY before....

I'm an atheist.

I don't have a "faith."

I am a skeptic, and as any good skeptic, one should be skeptical of one's own beliefs. So sure, it's possible that Christians are right.

Skeptics are free to doubt and disbelieve anything -- but doubt is a luxury faithful Christians can never have.

Whether a person believes in God or not, anyone with any life experience, and any capability of self-reflection will have times of self doubt, or doubt about the meaning of life. Obviously though all you Atheists answering here have life all figured out.

because, atheists, at least a good one, is far more rational then most religious people. and IF an athiest feels unsure about his/her position, the correct thing to do is to challenge that position with evidence.

the funny thing is...every single time ive wavered, and thought "wow..maybe the bible freaks had it right!" when i took the time i sought the facts... my belief there is no god came out on top.

you cannot prove there is no god...but it is a mathematical certianty...just as it is certain the earth moves around the sun ...that there is no god...

Atheists don't say our "faith is wavering" because we don't have "faith." We prefer evidence, which "faith" does not have.

I have never thought "Hey, maybe the Christians were right" for the same reason I thought them wrong to begin with. They have absolutely no evidence for what they believe. It's all about "faith," which doesn't do it for me.
