Why is it that people don't curse Hare Krishna, or Allah or Buddha or even Tupac for that matter? I was thinking about it the other day because I have this co-worker who curses Jesus and I know he loves Tupac and so I took Tupac's name in vain in front of him and he wasn't even perturbed at all. Why is it that only God and Jesus are worthy to be cursed by the general population and all of these other religious icons - it's almost laughable to curse them? I mean Pope dammit, or Hare fing Krishna??? When I try it to see what people do or think - who believe in these other icons - they are not bothered at all - they think this is hilarious - but when someone curses Jesus - it really hurts my feelings and others I know don't like it either. What are your thoughts on this?

Because Christianity is the biggest religion in this language's culture. In cultures where Christianity isn't so popular, you don't see people using the same cuss words when they hit their thumb with a hammer.

But for PETE's sake, there aren't the only names used in vain. You don't have to be a peeping TOM (with TOM foolery) or a private DICK to know that. I mean, any TOM, DICK OR HARRY can find other examples.

And don't tell me "No way, JOSE!" All of you plain JANEs, JOE schmoes, and JOHNNY-come-latelies need to wake up and smell the cup of JOE. Or I'll threaten you with a BILLY club and a CHARLIE horse.

It's cultural. I'm in the US and I grew up speaking English, in a country where Christianity is the most popular religion. Had I grown up in a different culture and had a different native language, I'd be using their related curse words instead. It's not "rebelling". When you hit your thumb with a hammer, you're not in any frame of mind for rationalizing something. You're in pain, and you want to let it out. Swearing in these situations is largely involuntary.

Oh my, I wish I could tell you, but I'm a person who doesn't curse using the trinities names. Although I used to when I was out of the Church and no longer was respecting The Holy Trinity. If could be just for a shock effect. Same thing with using vulgar language. Some people think that it's cool and hip to swear and use vulgarities. I do understand what you mean though.

This life is tough enough with the way society is right now, so you really need to learn how to let things roll off your back. Feeling hurt every time you hear somebody swear will eventually weigh you down and believe me that's not worth it. My brother is not a Christian and my mother has told me she can take the vulgar language that comes out of his mouth, but it's when he takes the Holy Trinity's names in vain that bothers her. We love him though. We love him unconditionally and that means accepting the things that come out of his mouth whether we like it or not.

You need to learn how to live with it.

Its a cultural thing. I say jesus f&*king christ all the time, just out of habit. I should probably mix it up a bit. Buddha damnit! The only reason that it bothers you is because you think god is real. Nobody cares if you diss Tupac, he's dead and he can't hear you. For some reason you think jesus can hear it when peope take the "lord's" name in vain.

I totally agree in fact some guy said for Ch@@t's sake the other day..I asked him why he had to take the Lord's name in vain when he doesn't even believe in Him...Why not say for Bob's sake or Bob d@@n it.. what is the point?? They have no clue what they do when they Blaspheme the name of the Lord that is literally the worst sin you can commit and they have no idea..we just talked about it in Church.. It hurts my feelings too because I know the sacrifice he made to save a wretch like me...

Just because you live in an anglo area doesnt mean that people dont say these things in other cultures. I'm sure there are a lot of expressions with allahs name in muslim culture. Why does it hurt your feelings? It seems christians are often very affected by what other people are doing or saying. I am not christian, but when I see the mcriticizing gays, or telling everyone else how they are a sinner or they are going to hell, it just makes christians look weak and hypocritical.

That is an interesting observation that I have never thought about. Maybe it is because the U.S., if you are in the U.S., is mostly a Christian country and we are taught not to take the Lord's name in vain. I wonder what happens in other countries where another religion is the main one. Of course we also have freedom of speech here, so no one is going to kill you for saying it.

It bothers me 2, but some people use Pete's name (for Pete's sake).

Maybe it's just a bad habit or maybe in other religions, their version of the Bible never says it's bad to use their icon's name in vain, so they aren't bothered when you do it.

They do, but there is no religious significance to "Bob damn it!" So, it's not as big of a deal to those that get offended for God & Jesus.
