If you get scared half to death once... then you are walking around as half a person.
So, if somebody scares you half to death AGAIN then they aren't scaring a whole person. Just half of you. So it's only 50% of that half. Which means you're a quarter of a person.
Just like if you went to the store and bought something that was 50% off for $10. That would mean you were paying $5. But then you found a special discount and you got another 50% off. You wouldn't add the two 50% 's together... (making it 100%) You would take the second 50% off of your $5... so you'd be paying $2.50.
It's really complicated, I know. But after you think about it for a while, you will understand! :)

Think of it as a progressive thing, the first time you'll be half dead, but then if you were scared half to death again, it would only be half of what is left, which means you'd be three quarters dead! :P

It depends on if the halving is an arithmetic progression or a geometric progress. If arithmetic, you're dead. If geometric, you're 1/4 alive.
